Diagnosis
The loud grinding noise emanating from the front wheel of your Gotrax G4 is almost certainly caused by a misalignment between the brake rotor (the steel disc) and the brake pads housed within the fixed caliper. Because the G4 utilizes a mechanical cable-actuated disc brake system, the caliper is bolted rigidly to the fork. If the caliper is shifted even a fraction of a millimeter, or if the rotor has been slightly warped during a bump or a hard stop, the pads will make constant contact with the disc. This creates a high-pitched metallic scrape during free-rolling and a loud, guttural grinding sound during braking as the pads clamp down on an uneven surface. You can confirm this by lifting the front of the scooter and spinning the wheel; if you see the disc wobbling or hear a "shick-shick" sound every half-rotation, your caliper is off-center or your rotor is warped. In some cases, small pebbles or road debris can become lodged in the narrow gap between the pad and the rotor, acting like sandpaper against the steel.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you need to center the caliper to ensure the rotor passes exactly through the middle of the brake pads. You will need a set of 4mm and 5mm Allen keys.
- Lift the front of the scooter and place it on a stable surface or have a partner hold it so the front wheel can spin freely.
- Locate the two mounting bolts that secure the brake caliper to the fork assembly. These are typically 4mm or 5mm hex bolts.
- Loosen these two bolts just enough so that the caliper can wiggle slightly side-to-side. Do not remove them entirely.
- Squeeze the left brake lever on the handlebar firmly and hold it. This action forces the brake pads to grip the rotor, naturally pulling the caliper into the most centered position possible.
- While continuing to hold the brake lever tightly, tighten the mounting bolts. Alternate between the two bolts—tighten the top one a few turns, then the bottom one—to ensure the caliper doesn't shift as you torque them down.
- Release the brake lever and spin the wheel. The grinding should be gone. If you still hear a slight rub, repeat the process, slightly adjusting the caliper by hand before tightening.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Rotor Warpage: Spin the wheel and look closely at the rotor from the front. If the disc "wobbles" left and right as it spins, the rotor is warped. You can carefully true the rotor by placing a crescent wrench on the edge of the disc where it hits the pad and applying very gentle pressure in the opposite direction of the warp. Be extremely careful not to bend the disc further.
- Clean the Brake Surface: If the grinding sounds "gritty," you may have metallic debris or oil on the disc. Use 90% isopropyl alcohol and a clean microfiber cloth to wipe down the rotor surface. Avoid using soap or degreasers that leave a residue, as this can cause brake fade or squealing.
- Adjust Brake Cable Tension: If the grinding happens only when braking, the cable may be too tight, preventing the pads from fully retracting. Use the barrel adjuster located at the brake lever to unscrew the nut slightly, increasing the gap between the pads and the rotor.
- Replace the Brake Pads: Inspect the pads for "glazing" (a shiny, mirror-like finish) or wear. If the friction material has worn down to the metal backing plate, you will hear a horrific grinding sound. Replace the pads immediately to avoid ruining the rotor.
Heads Up
- Never apply WD-40, oil, or any lubricant to the brake rotor; doing so will contaminate the pads and destroy your stopping power.
- Check your caliper bolts every 50 miles of riding. Vibrations from commuting on uneven pavement can loosen these bolts, which may lead to the caliper locking up during a ride.
- When cleaning the rotor, always wipe in the direction of the wheel's rotation to avoid scratching the steel surface.
- If you notice a "lip" forming on the edge of the rotor, it means the disc is worn thin and needs to be replaced entirely to ensure safety.
