Because the heating element operates at a high temperature to keep coffee at approximately 175°F, any microscopic layer of debris creates an uneven surface, preventing the carafe from seating flush. When the carafe doesn't sit flat, an air gap is created between the heat source and the glass. Since heat transfer in this model relies on direct conduction, this gap prevents the coffee from maintaining its temperature, leading to lukewarm brew. You can confirm this by placing a flat edge, like a credit card or a small ruler, across the warming plate; if there is a visible gap or the card rocks, the plate is warped. If the carafe rocks but the plate is flat, the issue lies with the glass base or the carafe lid interfering with the machine's chassis.

How to Fix It

To resolve the instability and restore heating efficiency, follow these precise steps:

1. Unplug the machine and allow the warming plate to cool completely to room temperature to avoid cracking the borosilicate glass.
2. Inspect the bottom rim of the carafe. Use a damp microfiber cloth with a small amount of white vinegar to scrub away any brown, sticky residue or mineral deposits. Pay close attention to the outer edge of the glass base where it makes contact with the plate.
3. Clean the warming plate using a non-abrasive scrubbing sponge. Avoid using steel wool or harsh scouring pads, as scratching the aluminum surface can create "peaks" that increase the wobble.
4. Check the lid alignment. Remove the carafe lid entirely and place the carafe on the plate. If it sits flush without the lid, the handle of the lid is likely hitting the brew basket housing, tilting the carafe.
