If the noise is a consistent, high-frequency whine rather than a sporadic screech, it may indicate that the lubrication on the drive shaft has dried out or that the grinder is struggling against an overly fine setting that has caused "clumping" or "bridging" in the hopper. To confirm, check if the noise persists when you change the grind setting dial (located inside the bean hopper) to a coarser setting. If the noise remains identical across all settings, you have a physical obstruction lodged in the teeth of the ceramic burrs.
How to Fix It
To clear the obstruction and restore quiet operation, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the machine completely using the main switch and disconnect the power cable from the wall outlet to prevent accidental activation of the grinder.
- Open the bean hopper lid and empty all remaining coffee beans into a container. Use a vacuum cleaner with a narrow nozzle attachment to suck out any loose beans or grounds from the hopper throat.
- Locate the grind adjustment dial inside the hopper. Rotate it to the coarsest setting (the highest number) to create the maximum possible gap between the ceramic burrs.
- Using a high-intensity flashlight, inspect the grinding chamber. Look for small pebbles, pieces of plastic, or "petrified" coffee beans that have hardened over time.
- Use a stiff-bristled nylon brush (a clean, firm toothbrush is ideal) to vigorously scrub the gaps between the burrs. Rotate the brush in the direction of the grind to push debris outward.
- If a fragment is visible but stuck, use a pair of plastic tweezers to gently extract it. Do not use a metal screwdriver or needle, as scratching the ceramic burrs will create permanent "burrs" on the material, leading to uneven grinds.
- Once cleared, manually rotate the grinder shaft (if accessible) or simply reassemble and run a "test grind" without beans to see if the screeching has subsided.
If That Didn't Work
