Diagnosis
The warping in the Blackstone 36-inch hard cover is primarily caused by thermal expansion and contraction of the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or ABS plastic. When the cover is exposed to direct UV rays and high ambient temperatures, the plastic expands. If the cover is locked tightly or the griddle surface underneath remains significantly cooler than the air, a temperature differential is created. This causes the material to "oil can" or bow, as the plastic expands at a different rate than the metal frame of the griddle it is resting upon.
Furthermore, if the cover is left in a high-moisture environment or subjected to freeze-thaw cycles, the plastic can lose its structural rigidity. You can confirm this by placing the cover on a known flat surface, such as a concrete garage floor; if the edges lift more than 1/4 inch or the center bows upward, the plastic has reached its "plastic deformation" point, meaning the molecular structure has shifted and it will no longer naturally return to its original flat state.
How to Fix It
While plastic deformation is difficult to reverse, you can often "reset" the shape using controlled heat and pressure. This process requires patience to avoid melting the material.
- Remove the cover from the griddle and place it on a completely flat, non-combustible surface (like a driveway or patio) during the hottest part of the day.
- Allow the cover to sit in direct sunlight for 2 to 3 hours. This softens the plastic and makes it more malleable.
- Once the plastic feels warm to the touch, place heavy, flat weights across the warped areas. Use cinder blocks, heavy paving stones, or stacks of books. Ensure the weights are distributed evenly to avoid creating new dents.
- Apply a thin layer of cardboard or a towel between the weight and the plastic to prevent the weight from leaving a permanent indentation or scratch in the finish.
- Leave the weights in place for at least 24 hours, allowing the plastic to cool and set in the flat position.
- Slowly remove the weights and test the fit on the 36-inch griddle surface.
If That Didn't Work
If the thermal resetting method fails, consider these alternatives:
- Heat Gun Reshaping: Use a professional heat gun on the lowest setting. Gently wave the gun over the warped area from 6 inches away—never hold it in one spot or you will melt a hole through the cover. Once the plastic becomes flexible, manually press it flat against the griddle edge and hold it until it cools.
- Trim the Contact Points: If the warping is only occurring at the edges (preventing a flush seal), use a heavy-duty utility knife or a sanding block to carefully shave down the high points of the plastic rim. This allows the cover to sit flat even if there is a slight bow in the center.
- Switch to a Soft-Shell Vinyl Cover: If the hard cover is severely compromised, replace it with a heavy-duty 600D polyester soft cover. Soft covers are immune to warping and provide better wind protection, though they offer less physical protection against falling debris.
- Install an Aftermarket Steel Lid: For those in extreme climates, replacing the plastic hard cover with a custom-fabricated stainless steel lid eliminates warping entirely and provides a more permanent, professional-grade seal.

- Avoid locking the cover's latches too tightly during peak summer months; leaving a small amount of "play" allows the plastic to expand without bowing.
- Store your griddle in a shaded area or under a lean-to whenever possible to reduce UV degradation and thermal stress.
- Clean the rim of the griddle station before applying the cover; grit and debris trapped under the rim can create pressure points that accelerate warping.
- Never place the hard cover on the griddle surface while the metal is still hot from cooking, as the direct heat transfer will warp the plastic almost instantly.
