Diagnosis
The persistent glow you are seeing is the "Locator LED," a small green indicator light designed to help users find the switch in a dark room. Unlike traditional light switches, the Caseta dimmer (specifically the PD-6WCL model) utilizes a low-voltage LED that is powered by the internal circuitry of the switch. Because this light is integrated into the hardware to provide a visual status cue, it cannot be completely disabled via software or a physical toggle. The perceived brightness is often exacerbated by the high contrast of a dark bedroom or hallway, making the green light appear more intense than it actually is. If the light seems abnormally bright, it is likely because the switch is currently set to the "High" intensity factory default. You can confirm this by observing the light from across the room; if it casts a visible green glow on the surrounding wall, the intensity is set to maximum.
How to Fix It
To reduce the brightness of the locator light, you must access the device settings through the Lutron app. Follow these precise steps to adjust the intensity:
- Open the Lutron app on your smartphone and ensure you are connected to the same network as your Lutron Smart Bridge (Hub).
- From the main dashboard, select the specific Room or Zone where the problematic dimmer is located.
- Tap on the individual Dimmer Switch device name to open the device control screen.
- Tap the Settings icon (represented by a gear or three dots in the upper right-hand corner of the device screen).
- Scroll down the menu until you find the Locator Light option.
- You will see three selectable intensity levels: Low, Medium, and High.
- Select Low. This will significantly reduce the lumen output of the green LED, making it a subtle glimmer rather than a bright beacon.
- Exit the settings menu; the change is applied instantly to the switch hardware via the Bridge.
If That Didn't Work
If the "Low" setting is still too bright for your environment, or if the setting is not appearing in your app, try these alternative solutions:
- Physical Light Block (The "Tape Method"): Since there is no "Off" setting in the firmware, the most effective solution is a physical block. Use a small piece of 1/8-inch circular black electrical tape or a "LightDims" brand dimming sticker. Carefully trim the tape to cover only the small green aperture. This blocks 100% of the light without affecting the tactile feel of the rocker switch.
- Firmware Update: If the "Locator Light" menu option is missing, your Smart Bridge or Dimmer may be running an outdated firmware version. Go to the App Settings > Advanced Settings > Check for Updates. Ensure the Bridge is updated first, as it pushes the configuration changes to the switches.
- Hardware Swap: If you absolutely cannot tolerate any LED light, consider replacing the PD-6WCL dimmer with a Caseta On/Off Switch (PD-1KL). While some versions still have indicators, certain legacy or specific model iterations have less intrusive lighting profiles.
- Switch Plate Gasket: Install a thicker, oversized wall plate or a decorative trim kit. By creating a slight gap or shadow between the switch and the wall, you can reduce the amount of light that reflects off the paint, which often makes the LED feel brighter than it is.
Heads Up
- Do Not Attempt to Disassemble: Opening the Caseta dimmer housing to physically clip the LED wire will void your warranty and, more importantly, can damage the sensitive capacitive touch components of the rocker.
- App Syncing: If you change the setting to "Low" and the light doesn't change immediately, power cycle your circuit breaker for 10 seconds to force the switch to re-handshake with the Lutron Bridge.
- Compatibility: Note that the Locator Light setting is only available for the dimming models; standard on/off switches may have different indicator behaviors.
- Color Perception: Green LEDs are naturally more visible to the human eye in low-light conditions than red or amber LEDs, which is why the "Low" setting may still feel prominent.
