the non-stick coating on the drip tray is peeling off in big flakes after a few months, is that safe?

— asked by Casey

DIAGNOSIS This is coating failure from abrasive cleaning or thermal shock. It is not safe.

FIX You must stop using that drip tray immediately. Flakes can contaminate food and are a health hazard. Order a genuine replacement tray from Instant. Do not use aftermarket trays that may not fit the heat profile.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If the new tray also fails quickly, your cleaning method is the cause. Never use metal scouring pads, abrasive cleaners, or dishwasher pods with citric acid. Never plunge a hot tray into cold water.

HEADS UP Clean the tray while warm with hot soapy water and a soft sponge or nylon brush. Let it soak if needed. Dry it completely before storage to prevent rust under any remaining coating.
