The machine heats water to a precise extraction temperature and pushes it through the grounds at a slower rate to create a "coffee concentrate." The intention is for this high-intensity liquid to hit the ice cubes, flash-chilling the brew while the melting ice provides the necessary dilution to reach a standard coffee strength. When you experience "melted ice" and hot coffee, it is usually due to a thermal imbalance. If you are using a standard coffee-to-water ratio, the brew is too dilute and too voluminous, meaning the ice cannot absorb the heat energy quickly enough. This results in the ice melting completely before the coffee reaches a palatable temperature. You can confirm this by brewing a "Hot" cup of the same size; if the volume is identical to your "Over Ice" brew, the machine is simply running a standard cycle without the necessary concentration for icing.
How to Fix It
To achieve a truly chilled beverage without watering down the flavor or melting all your ice, you must adjust the brew density and the vessel preparation. Follow these exact steps:
- Prepare the Vessel: Fill your glass or travel mug to the absolute brim with fresh, hard-frozen ice cubes. Do not leave gaps; the more ice surface area available, the faster the thermal exchange occurs.
- Adjust Coffee Dosage: Increase your coffee grounds by 25-30%. If you normally use 2 tablespoons of medium-grind coffee for a 10oz cup, increase this to 2.5 or 3 tablespoons. This creates the "concentrate" needed to withstand the ice melt.
