Diagnosis
The uneven plate gap is almost always caused by an issue with the floating plate system. This iron uses four small silver springs under the top plate to allow it to self-adjust against the bottom plate. The problem occurs when those springs become dislodged from their slots, the hinge screws securing the plates loosen, or the floating plate mechanism is physically bent from impact.
How to Fix It
- Completely unplug the iron and allow it to cool to room temperature.
- Open the plates fully. Locate the four small, circular silver springs visible on the underside of the top plate, near the hinge.
- Using a fingernail or a small, non-metallic tool, gently press each spring to ensure it is properly seated in its individual slot and not tilted or popped out.
- While the plates are open, locate the two small screws on the hinge plate itself (usually on the sides). Using the correct size precision screwdriver, tighten both screws firmly but carefully. Do not force them.
- Close the plates and check the alignment. The gap should now be even along the entire length.
If That Didn't Work
If the gap persists after reseating the springs and tightening the screws, the metal of the floating plate assembly itself is likely warped. This can happen if the iron was dropped or subjected to extreme force. Unfortunately, this internal component cannot be straightened reliably. The permanent solution is to replace the entire top plate assembly, which is a service best performed by an authorized BaBylissPRO repair center.
Heads Up
Never overtighten the hinge screws, as they thread into a plastic housing that can easily strip. A stripped thread will prevent proper plate tension and necessitate a housing replacement. Always ensure the iron is completely cool and unplugged before attempting any inspection or adjustment.
