Diagnosis
The internal thermostat sensor (a thermistor) is either faulty or has lost proper physical contact with the heating plate. When you clamp a section of hair, the plate temperature drops, but the malfunctioning sensor doesn't detect this correctly, causing the heating element to cycle off prematurely. This creates the frustrating cycle of a sudden temperature drop followed by a slow recovery.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the flat iron and allow it to cool completely.
- Using a precision screwdriver, remove the two small screws on the hinge at the top of the iron.
- Carefully lift off the top plate assembly to expose the interior. Locate the small, usually white or beige, ceramic thermistor. It's a tiny component pressed against the underside of the heating plate.
- Clean the contact area where the thermistor touches the metal plate with a cotton swab dipped in 90%+ isopropyl alcohol to remove any thermal paste residue or debris.
- Reassemble the unit, making sure the thermistor is firmly and squarely pressed against the plate before tightening the hinge screws.
- Plug in the iron, set it to a high temperature, and test. The plates should now heat up and maintain temperature consistently under light pressure.
If That Didn't Work
The thermistor itself has likely failed. Its electrical resistance, which dictates the temperature reading, drifts out of specification. Therefore, the fix requires replacing the entire main board assembly, which is a professional repair.
