The fact that the power light illuminates indicates that the primary AC power is reaching the device's logic board, but the failure of both the heating element and the rotation motor suggests a critical break in the secondary power rail or a failure of the main control relay. In the CHI Spin N Curl, the power light is on a separate, simpler circuit than the high-voltage heating element and the DC motor. When both fail simultaneously while the light stays on, it usually means the "trigger" signal from the button is not reaching the power distribution module. This is most commonly caused by a fatigued solder joint on the internal PCB (Printed Circuit Board) or a severed connection in the internal wiring harness that connects the button assembly to the main board. Because this tool rotates, the internal wiring is subject to constant mechanical stress and twisting; over time, a wire can snap inside the plastic housing. If the unit was dropped or experienced a power surge, the thermal fuse—a safety component designed to kill power to the heating element to prevent fire—may have tripped, effectively disconnecting the heating and motor circuits while leaving the indicator light active.
How to Fix It
Since this is an internal electrical failure, you must first rule out external power delivery before attempting a hardware reset. Follow these steps precisely:
- Unplug the unit from the wall outlet and leave it disconnected for at least 10 minutes to allow any residual capacitance in the capacitors to discharge.
- Inspect the power cord for any kinks, flat spots, or exposed copper. If the cord is frayed near the base of the handle, the internal connection is likely severed.
- Plug the unit into a different circuit (a different room) to ensure you aren't dealing with a tripped GFCI outlet that is providing just enough voltage for a LED light but not enough for the heating element.
- Press and hold the power/activation button for a full 10 seconds while plugged in. Some versions of the CHI logic board require a "hard reset" to clear a safety lockout mode.
- Check the rotating barrel for any hair or debris buildup. If the motor is jammed, the internal circuit breaker may prevent the unit from heating as a safety precaution. Use a fine-tooth comb to clear the barrel gaps.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Thermal Fuse: If you are comfortable with basic electronics, open the casing to locate the thermal fuse. If the fuse has blown due to overheating, it will show continuity failure when tested with a multimeter. Replacing this fuse (usually a 250V rated component) will restore both heat and rotation.
- Resolder the Button Contacts: The tactile switch on the CHI Spin N Curl is prone to "cold solder joints." Using a fine-tip soldering iron, reflow the two contact points where the button meets the PCB. This often restores the connection that allows the button to trigger the heating and spinning sequence.
- Check the Internal Ribbon Cable: Ensure the ribbon cable connecting the handle to the rotating head is firmly seated. If the cable has slipped out of its socket due to the centrifugal force of the rotation, the unit will power on but will not execute any functions.
- Voltage Testing: Use a multimeter to check if the 110V-120V AC is reaching the heating element terminals. If the board is sending power but the element isn't heating, the ceramic coating may have masked a break in the internal heating coil, necessitating a full head replacement.

- Never use the device on damp hair; moisture can cause a short circuit in the rotation motor, which will permanently fry the main control board.
- Avoid wrapping the power cord tightly around the handle when storing. This creates tension on the internal wires and is the leading cause of the "power light on, no heat" failure.
- Always unplug the unit immediately after use. Leaving the unit in standby mode can degrade the ceramic heating element over time.
