Diagnosis
The steel screw drive needs lubrication. WD-40 is a solvent and degreaser, not a lubricant. It will attract dust and make the problem worse.
How to Fix It
Use Genie Silicone Lubricant or a high-quality, non-grease silicone spray. Unplug the opener. Apply a light bead of lubricant along the entire length of the screw drive rail. Run the opener through a few full cycles to distribute it. Wipe off any excess.
If That Didn't Work
The whining may be from the drive sleeve or motor bearings, not the screw itself. Listen closely. If the noise is loudest at the motor unit, refer to the drive sleeve fix.
Heads Up
Never use grease, oil, or penetrating oil on the screw drive. It will gum up, attract debris, and can damage the plastic trolley and drive sleeve.
