To prevent the UV lamp from overheating and to extend the operational lifespan of the bulb, the firmware is programmed with a hard-coded duty cycle. Specifically, once the UV light has been active for a continuous period of 4 hours, the system automatically triggers a shutdown of the sterilization module. This is a common point of confusion because the main air filtration (HEPA and Carbon) continues to run uninterrupted, leading users to believe the UV component has burnt out or experienced a circuit failure. You can confirm this is the case if the light turns off consistently after a few hours but can be manually reactivated using the remote. If the light flickers or fails to ignite even after a manual reset, then you may be dealing with a failing ballast or a degraded UV-C tube.
How to Fix It
To restore the UV sterilization function and manage its operation, follow these precise steps. Note that the UV function is decoupled from the standard power button on the chassis for safety reasons to prevent accidental exposure.
- Ensure the main unit is powered on and the fan is actively spinning. The UV light cannot be activated if the unit is in standby mode.
- Locate the infrared (IR) remote control. The UV function is not accessible via the touch panel on the top of the machine.
- Point the remote directly at the IR receiver on the front of the unit from a distance of 3-5 feet.
- Press the dedicated UV button (usually indicated by a sun or lamp icon). You should see a corresponding indicator light on the control panel illuminate, confirming the UV-C lamp is now active.
- Allow the unit to run. If the light turns off again after exactly 4 hours, this confirms the safety timer is functioning as intended.
If That Didn't Work
If the UV light refuses to turn on despite using the remote, try these troubleshooting steps:
- Remote Battery Replacement: The UV button is often the first to fail if the CR2025 or similar coin cell battery is low. Replace the battery and test the button again. If the fan speed buttons work but the UV button doesn't, the battery is likely fine, but the specific IR code for the UV function may be blocked.
- Hard Power Cycle: Unplug the unit from the wall outlet completely for 60 seconds. This clears the internal capacitor and resets the safety timer logic. Plug it back in and attempt to trigger the UV light via the remote immediately.
- Filter Seating Check: Ensure the HEPA filter is seated perfectly flush against the internal housing. In some MOOKA models, a misaligned filter can slightly shift the internal chassis, preventing the UV lamp from making a secure connection with its socket. Remove the filter, clear any debris from the base, and re-insert it firmly.
- Lamp Inspection: With the unit unplugged and the filter removed, visually inspect the UV bulb. If you see a dark gray or milky white coating at the ends of the tube, the bulb has reached the end of its effective life (typically 8,000 to 10,000 hours) and must be replaced.

- Ozone Awareness: While the UV light kills bacteria and viruses, running it 24/7 in a small, unventilated room can lead to a slight buildup of ozone. The 4-hour auto-off feature is designed to mitigate this risk.
- Filter Synergy: Remember that the UV light works in tandem with the HEPA filter. If your filter is clogged with dust, the UV light cannot effectively sterilize the air passing through, as the dust particles "shield" the microbes. Change your filters every 6 months for maximum UV efficiency.
