Because the thermostat is calibrated to maintain a high temperature to keep a full 14-cup pot warm, it continues to pump heat into the base even when only a small amount of coffee remains. This leads to localized boiling and caramelization of the coffee sugars, resulting in a bitter, burnt taste and a brown residue scorched onto the bottom of the stainless steel interior.
How to Fix It
To prevent scorching while still utilizing the warming functionality, follow these precise operational steps:
- Adjust the Auto-Off Timer: Do not leave the machine on the default setting if you are not drinking the full pot quickly. Press the "Hour" and "Min" buttons to set the Auto-Off timer to 60 minutes. This ensures the plate is deactivated before the liquid level drops to the critical "scorching zone."
- Manage Liquid Volume: Once the coffee level in the carafe reaches the 3-cup mark (approximately 24 ounces), immediately remove the carafe from the warming plate.
- The Transfer Method: Pour the remaining 3 cups of coffee into a separate pre-heated insulated thermal carafe or a vacuum-sealed travel mug. This removes the coffee from the direct heat source while maintaining the temperature via the vacuum seal.
- Cold-Water Rinse: If you notice a burnt smell, immediately remove the carafe and rinse the bottom with cool water to stop the thermal transfer before the residue permanently bonds to the steel.

- Calibrate the Brew Strength: Switch the brew setting from "Bold" to "Regular." Bold brew cycles often run slower, keeping the coffee on the heating element longer during the initial drip phase, which pre-heats the bottom of the carafe to a higher temperature than necessary.

- Use Distilled Water: If you live in a hard-water area, calcium deposits can build up on the bottom of the carafe. These deposits act as thermal conductors, pulling more heat from the plate into the coffee. Run a full descaling cycle using a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water.
