Diagnosis
Poor cut quality on the Makita XSH03Z is almost always a result of "over-extension" or "under-extension" of the blade. When the blade is set too deep, the saw creates excessive friction against the material, leading to "blade wander" and significant sawdust buildup in the kerf. This causes the motor to bog down, resulting in jagged edges, burn marks on the wood, and a higher likelihood of the blade binding or kicking back because the saw is fighting too much surface area. Conversely, if the blade is set too shallow, the rear of the blade cannot clear the material, causing the saw to "pinch" the wood. This creates a bowing effect in the cut, which ruins the squareness of the board and can lead to dangerous kickbacks. To confirm your depth is wrong, look at the exit point of the cut: if you see deep gouges or "blowout" on the bottom of the workpiece, your blade is extending too far. If the cut stops abruptly or the saw feels like it's straining to finish the pass, you are likely under-extended.
How to Fix It
To achieve a professional, clean cut with the XSH03Z, follow this precise calibration sequence:
- Safety Lockout: Remove the 18V LXT battery entirely from the tool. Never adjust the depth lever with a live power source, as an accidental trigger pull during adjustment can cause severe injury.
- Positioning: Place the saw base (shoe) flat on a stable workbench. Lay your workpiece on top of the shoe or place the saw directly on the material you intend to cut.
- Release the Lock: Locate the depth adjustment lever on the side of the saw. Pull the lever outward to unlock the base plate.
- The "One-Tooth" Rule: Slowly pivot the base plate until the blade teeth extend just barely past the bottom surface of the wood. The ideal setting is for only 1/8" to 1/4" (roughly 3-6mm) of a single tooth to be visible below the workpiece. This minimizes friction while ensuring a clean exit.
- Verify Maximums: If you are cutting thick lumber, remember that the XSH03Z has a maximum cutting depth of 57mm (2-1/4") at a 90° angle. If your material is thicker than this, you must flip the board and make two passes.
- Lock and Test: Push the depth locking lever firmly back into its seated position. Give the base plate a sharp tug to ensure it is locked and will not shift during the vibration of a high-RPM cut.
If That Didn't Work
- Check Blade Sharpness: If the depth is correct but you still see "crappy cuts" or tearing, your blade may be dull. The XSH03Z is a high-torque saw; a dull blade will cause the motor to struggle even at the correct depth. Replace the blade if you see rounded edges on the carbide tips.
- Inspect the Base Plate for Debris: Sawdust and resin can build up in the sliding mechanism of the depth adjustment. Use compressed air to blow out the tracks and apply a small amount of dry silicone lubricant to ensure the base plate is sitting perfectly flush against the material.
- Evaluate Material Support: If the wood is sagging between supports, the kerf will close on the blade regardless of your depth setting. Ensure the workpiece is clamped tightly or supported on a sawhorse to prevent "pinching" the blade.
- Verify Blade Diameter: Ensure you are using the correct 66mm (2-5/8") bore blade designed for this model. Using an oversized or incorrect blade can throw off the depth markings and cause the guard to drag.

- Avoid "Over-Cutting": Setting the blade too deep doesn't just ruin the cut; it increases the risk of the blade hitting a nail or knot and kicking back with significantly more force.
- Guard Clearance: Always check that the lower blade guard retracts smoothly after you adjust the depth. If the base is set too high or low, the guard can sometimes snag on the material.
- Battery Heat: Deep cuts in hardwood put a massive strain on the LXT cells. If the battery becomes hot to the touch, let it cool down before continuing to avoid triggering the thermal protection shutdown.
- Splinter Control: For the cleanest possible finish on the top surface, use a sacrificial "zero-clearance" board on top of your workpiece to prevent the fibers from tearing.
