Diagnosis
The Greenworks 40V 21-Inch mower is designed for gentle slopes, with a maximum recommended operating angle of 15 degrees. The confusion often arises because "hill" is subjective—a 15-degree slope is a significant incline. Exceeding this limit can cause the mower to tip, slide, or become unstable, leading to loss of control, battery or component damage, and serious personal injury.
How to Fix It
For safe operation on an acceptable slope (15 degrees or less):
- Always mow up and down the slope, never side-to-side, to maintain stability.
- Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear with good ankle support.
- Maintain a slow, steady pace and use extra caution when turning or changing direction.
- Keep both hands firmly on the handle and your weight centered over your feet.
- Ensure the grass catcher is empty and the battery is fully secured to prevent shifting weight.
If That Didn't Work
If your terrain feels unstable or exceeds the 15-degree limit, do not force the mower. Safer alternatives include:
- Using a lightweight string trimmer (weed whacker) to cut the grass.
- Employing a manual reel mower, which offers more control on steep grades.
- Considering a dedicated commercial-grade slope mower if the area is large and consistently steep.
Heads Up
Never operate this mower on wet or damp grass on any slope, as traction is drastically reduced. Always clear the area of debris, toys, or hidden obstacles before starting. If you feel the mower beginning to slip or pull, immediately release the safety bail handle to stop the blade and regain your footing.
