While the upper chamber looks like a standard Cafetera, the bottom reservoir is engineered specifically to interface with the induction-style heating element in the electric base. The base provides a calibrated, steady temperature rise that prevents the coffee from scorching and ensures the water reaches the precise boiling point required to push the brew through the filter. Using this unit on a gas stove introduces two critical failure points: thermal shock and material degradation. The base of the LAOION pot is designed for conductive heat transfer from a flat electric plate, not the concentrated, erratic licking flames of a gas burner. A gas flame creates intense hotspots on the bottom of the aluminum pot, which can lead to "pitting" or warping of the metal. Furthermore, the handle and the knob on the lid are made of heat-resistant plastics that are rated for the ambient heat of an electric base, but they are not rated for the direct convective heat and flare-ups associated with a gas range. This will likely result in the handle melting or the knob cracking during the first few brew cycles.
How to Fix It
To ensure the longevity of your machine and your personal safety, you must use the unit exclusively with its provided electric base. If the cord is too short for your current kitchen layout, follow these steps to optimize your setup:
- Unplug the electric base from the wall outlet completely to ensure there is no residual current. >
- Clear a dedicated, flat, and heat-resistant surface (such as a granite countertop or a wooden butcher block) near a grounded 110V-120V outlet. >
- Purchase a heavy-duty, surge-protected extension cord rated for at least 15 amps. Avoid using thin, low-gauge "lamp cords," as the heating element in the LAOION base draws significant wattage and can overheat a cheap extension cable. >
- Connect the extension cord to the wall first, then plug the LAOION base into the extension cord. >
- Place the coffee pot firmly onto the base, ensuring the contact points are aligned before switching the power on. >
- Fill the reservoir only to the designated "Max" line to prevent boil-over, which can leak into the electric base and cause a short circuit. >
If That Didn't Work
If you absolutely cannot find a way to use the electric base or if the base has failed, consider these alternatives:
- Purchase a dedicated traditional aluminum Moka pot (non-electric). If your primary goal is to use a gas stove, a standard 6-cup Bialetti or similar Cuban-style Cafetera is designed specifically for direct flame and costs significantly less than the electric version.
- Relocate your coffee station to a different outlet. If the cord is too short, moving the unit to a kitchen island or a different counter section may eliminate the need for an extension cord and reduce the risk of tripping over cables.
- Use a high-wattage power strip with a built-in circuit breaker. This provides a safer way to extend the reach of the short power cord while protecting the internal heating element of the LAOION base from voltage spikes.
- Check the bottom of the pot for any debris. If you tried using it on a stove and it now fails to work on the electric base, inspect the bottom for carbon buildup or warping. If the bottom is no longer perfectly flat, it will not make a proper connection with the electric heating element.

- Never submerge the electric base in water; use a damp cloth to wipe the exterior. Water entering the heating circuitry will permanently kill the unit.
- Avoid using "extra-fine" or "espresso-grind" coffee. Use a medium-fine grind specifically for Moka pots to prevent the pressure from building up too high, which can cause the pot to spray hot coffee from the seal.
- Do not leave the unit plugged in when not in use. The heating element is designed for a single brew cycle and should not be kept under tension for extended periods.
