The "hissing and spitting" you are experiencing is a classic symptom of a pressure failure, specifically caused by a breach in the vacuum seal or an incorrect water-to-coffee ratio. In a LAOION electric moka pot, the heating element must boil the water to create enough steam pressure to force the liquid upward through the coffee grounds. If you see steam escaping from the top without any coffee flowing, the pressure is venting prematurely instead of pushing the water through the puck. This usually happens for one of two reasons: either the water level is too high, covering the safety valve and preventing the pressure from building correctly, or the coffee grounds are packed too tightly (over-tamped), creating a "plug" that the pressure cannot overcome. When the water can't move up, the steam finds the path of least resistance—which is usually the gap between the basket and the upper chamber or the safety valve itself—resulting in that loud hissing sound and steam bursts without any actual brew.
How to Fix It
To resolve this and get a proper flow, follow these exact steps to reset the pressure dynamics of the machine:
- Unplug the unit and let it cool for 15 minutes. Attempting to refill a hot unit can cause steam burns or thermal shock to the heating element.
- Fill the lower reservoir with filtered, cold water. Look for the small brass safety valve on the side of the interior wall. Fill the water exactly to the bottom edge of this valve. Do not submerge the valve; if you do, the machine cannot regulate pressure, and it will spit steam.
- Insert the filter basket. Use a medium-fine grind (slightly coarser than espresso, similar to table salt). Fill the basket to the brim, but do not press or tamp the coffee down. Gently level the top with your finger or a spoon. Packing the coffee too tightly creates a wall that the electric heater cannot push through.
- Ensure the rubber gasket (the O-ring) is seated perfectly flat in the groove of the upper chamber. If it is pinched or skewed, steam will leak from the sides instead of pushing the coffee up.
- Screw the top chamber on tightly. It should be snug, but do not over-torque it to the point of stripping the threads.
- Plug the unit in and engage the power switch. Wait for the "bubbling" sound; the coffee should begin to flow steadily into the upper carafe within 5-8 minutes.
If That Didn't Work
- Check your grind size: If you are using "espresso fine" powder (which looks like flour), the water cannot penetrate the puck. Switch to a slightly coarser "Moka" grind. If the coffee is too fine, the pressure will build up until it vents as steam rather than flowing as liquid.
- Inspect the Gasket: Remove the rubber ring and rinse it with warm soapy water to remove any coffee oils. Dry it completely and re-insert it. A thin film of oil on the gasket can cause a microscopic leak that prevents the unit from reaching the 1.5 to 2 bars of pressure needed for extraction.
- Test without Coffee: Run a cycle with only water in the base (no coffee in the basket). If water flows freely into the top, your machine is functioning perfectly, and the issue is definitively the density or amount of coffee grounds you are using.
- Verify Voltage: Ensure the unit is plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than a low-wattage extension cord or power strip. Electric moka pots require a consistent draw of power to maintain the temperature necessary for pressure buildup.

- Never leave the unit unattended: Because this is an electric heater, if the water runs dry or the brew is blocked, the unit can overheat rapidly.
- Avoid the Dishwasher: The aluminum and specialized coatings on the LAOION pot can oxidize or peel in high-heat dishwasher cycles. Hand wash only with a soft sponge.
- Cold Water Only: Do not start the machine with pre-heated or boiling water. Starting with cold water allows the temperature to rise gradually, ensuring a more even extraction and preventing the coffee from "scorching" before it reaches the top.
- Clean the Valve: Every 30 days, use a toothpick or small brush to ensure the brass safety valve is clear of mineral buildup or scale.
