Diagnosis
The faint printing and color dropout on the Canon PIXMA TR8620a, particularly immediately after installing new cartridges, typically indicates one of two things: air pockets trapped in the ink delivery system or dried ink residue blocking the microscopic nozzles of the print head. Even with brand-new cartridges, if the printer sat idle for several weeks, the ink remaining in the print head nozzles has likely dehydrated into a thick, waxy crust that prevents new ink from flowing through. This is often compounded by a "priming" failure. When you swap cartridges, the printer doesn't always automatically purge the air that enters the lines. If an air bubble is lodged between the cartridge outlet and the nozzle plate, the ink cannot reach the paper, resulting in "streaky" or nearly invisible colors. You can confirm this by printing a Nozzle Check pattern from the Maintenance menu; if you see missing grids or white gaps in the color blocks, the hardware is obstructed or improperly primed.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to clear the blockage and prime the ink system:
- Verify Cartridge Installation: Open the scanning unit and ensure the orange protective tape was completely removed from the PGI-280 and CLI-281 cartridges. Press down firmly on the center of each cartridge until you hear a distinct "click" to ensure the ink port is fully seated against the print head.
- Perform a Standard Cleaning: On the printer's home screen, select the Setup (gear icon) button. Navigate to Maintenance > Clean. Select "All Colors" and press OK. Once the cycle completes, print a Nozzle Check pattern to see if the color saturation has improved.
- Execute Deep Cleaning: If the standard clean fails, return to Maintenance and select Deep Cleaning. This uses a higher pressure pump to force ink through the nozzles. Note that this consumes a significant amount of ink. Run this once, then wait 30 minutes before printing another test page to allow any loosened ink debris to settle.
- Ink Flush (Last Resort): If the colors are still faint, go to Maintenance > Ink Flush. This is the most aggressive cleaning cycle available for the TR8620a. It completely flushes the ink system to remove air bubbles. Warning: This will rapidly deplete your ink levels and fill the maintenance cartridge faster.
If That Didn't Work
- Manually Clean the Print Head Contact Points: Power off the printer and unplug it. Remove the ink cartridges. Use a lint-free microfiber cloth dampened with a small amount of distilled water (not rubbing alcohol) to gently wipe the gold contact points on the cartridges and the corresponding pins inside the carriage. Debris or ink leaks on these contacts can cause "under-firing" of the nozzles.
- Check Paper Settings: Ensure your printer driver is not set to "Draft" or "Economy" mode. In the print dialog on your PC or Mac, go to Printing Preferences > Main and change the Quality setting from "Standard" to "High." This forces the printer to lay down more ink per square inch.
- Verify Ink Authenticity: If you are using third-party "compatible" or refilled cartridges, the chip may be reporting the ink level incorrectly, or the ink viscosity may be too high for the TR8620a's fine nozzles. Try a set of genuine Canon PGI-280/CLI-281 tanks to rule out ink chemistry issues.
- Inspect the Vent Holes: Ensure the yellow tape on the top of the cartridges was fully removed. If the vent hole is blocked, a vacuum forms inside the cartridge, preventing ink from flowing downward into the print head.
Heads Up
- Avoid "Dry-Firing": Never run multiple Deep Cleaning cycles back-to-back without printing a test page in between; this can overheat the print head elements and cause permanent hardware failure.
- Print Weekly: To prevent the TR8620a from clogging, print one full-color page at least once every 7-10 days to keep the nozzles moist.
- Use High-Quality Paper: Using overly textured or cheap paper can cause "ink bleed" or "wicking," making the colors appear faint even when the print head is functioning perfectly.
- Monitor the Maintenance Cartridge: Excessive use of the "Ink Flush" or "Deep Clean" functions will fill the waste ink absorber. If you see a "Waste Ink Full" error, you will need to replace the internal absorber pad.
