The Overhead Door Legacy 920 is experiencing a "false obstruction" trigger. While the safety sensors (photo-eyes) are clear, the motor's internal force-sensing system is detecting a spike in resistance as the door reaches the bottom of its travel. This is typically caused by the door hitting the floor or the weather stripping too aggressively, or the door's springs being slightly out of balance, causing the motor to work harder during the final inch of travel. When the motor detects a resistance level that exceeds the current "Down Force" threshold, it triggers a safety reversal to prevent the door from crushing an object or person. Because this happens consistently at the same spot, it is rarely a sensor failure and almost always a calibration issue between the motor's torque limit and the physical resistance of the door's landing point.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must increase the Down Force threshold to allow the motor to push through the final resistance of the floor seal.
- Locate the adjustment dials on the rear or side of the motor head unit. You will see two plastic dials: one labeled "UP FORCE" and one labeled "DOWN FORCE."
- Ensure the door is fully open before starting the adjustment to avoid accidental closure during the process.
- Using a small flat-head screwdriver or by hand, turn the DOWN FORCE dial clockwise. Do not make a full rotation; move it in small increments—approximately 15 to 30 degrees (about a quarter-turn).
- Clear the area under the door and initiate a closing cycle.
- If the door still reverses, repeat the clockwise turn in small increments. Continue this process until the door closes firmly against the floor without rebounding.
- Once the door closes successfully, perform three additional test cycles to ensure the setting is stable and the door does not "slam" the floor with excessive force.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Down Limit Setting: If the Down Force is maxed out and the door still reverses, your "Down Limit" may be set too far. The motor is trying to push the door *into* the concrete floor rather than just touching it. Locate the limit screws on the motor assembly and turn the "Down" limit screw counter-clockwise by a half-turn to slightly shorten the travel distance.
- Inspect the Bottom Seal: Examine the rubber weather stripping at the bottom of the door. If the rubber has hardened over time or has accumulated debris, it creates a rigid "bump" that triggers the force sensor. Clean the seal with a silicone-based lubricant or replace the seal if it is cracked and rigid.
- Inspect the Tracks for Debris: Check the bottom 6 inches of the vertical tracks for pebbles, buildup, or bent metal. Even a small obstruction in the track can cause the door to bind slightly as it reaches the bottom, spiking the motor's torque and triggering the reversal.
- Balance Test: Disconnect the opener by pulling the red emergency release cord. Manually lift the door halfway and let go. If the door slams down or shoots up, the springs are unbalanced. An unbalanced door puts irregular strain on the Legacy 920 motor, making force settings inconsistent. You will need to adjust the spring tension to ensure the door stays in place when released.

- Safety Warning: Never maximize the Down Force dial to the absolute stop. If the force is set too high, the safety reversal feature will be disabled, and the opener could cause serious injury or structural damage if it hits a real obstruction.
- Temperature Shifts: Be aware that rubber seals shrink in winter and expand in summer. You may need to tweak the Down Force dial by a small amount twice a year to compensate for seasonal changes in seal rigidity.
- Avoid "Slamming": If the door hits the floor with a loud thud or shakes the garage, you have set the Down Force or Down Limit too high. Back the settings off immediately to prevent wearing out the drive belt and gear assembly.
