The Dyson Pure Cool TP04 utilizes an infrared (IR) transmitter located at the top of the remote to communicate with the sensor on the fan's base. When the buttons do nothing, it is typically due to a voltage drop in the CR2032 lithium coin cell battery. Even if the battery is relatively new, a thin layer of oxidation or dust on the battery contacts can create a high-resistance connection, preventing the remote from sending a strong enough signal to trigger the fan's receiver. Another common root cause is "IR interference" or a blocked line-of-sight. Because the TP04 sensor is located low on the machine, furniture or thick carpets can obstruct the signal. Additionally, if the remote has been dropped, the internal tactile switches (the small metal domes under the buttons) can become misaligned or lose their spring tension, meaning the circuit is never actually closed when you press the button. You can confirm if the remote is transmitting by using a smartphone camera; point the remote at the camera lens and press a button—if you see a flickering purple/white light on your screen, the remote is working and the issue lies with the fan's receiver.
How to Fix It
To restore functionality to your remote, follow these precise steps to ensure a clean power connection and a fresh cell:
- Locate the small screw on the rear of the remote control. Use a #0 or #00 Phillips head precision screwdriver to remove this screw completely.
- Carefully pry open the battery compartment cover. Avoid using a metal screwdriver to pry it, as this can crack the plastic casing; a plastic spudger or a fingernail is preferred.
- Remove the existing CR2032 3V lithium coin cell battery.
- Inspect the gold-plated contact tabs. If you see any white powdery residue or dark oxidation, gently scrape it away using a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol.
- Insert a brand new, name-brand CR2032 battery. Ensure the positive (+) side is facing upward.
- Press the battery firmly into place to ensure it is seated flush against the contacts before replacing the cover.
- Reinstall the screw, tightening it until snug but avoiding over-tightening, which can strip the soft plastic threads.
- Stand within 3 feet of the TP04 and press the Power button to test the connection.
If That Didn't Work
- Clean the IR Receiver Window: The TP04 has an infrared receiver located on the front of the base. Over time, household dust and pet hair accumulate here. Use a microfiber cloth dampened with water to wipe the sensor area. If the sensor is obscured, the remote will appear dead even with a fresh battery.
- Check for Signal Interference: Strong sunlight hitting the fan's sensor or high-intensity halogen lamps can "blind" the IR receiver. Try operating the fan in a dimmed room or move the unit away from direct window light to see if the remote responsiveness returns.
- Perform a Hard Power Reset: Unplug the TP04 from the wall outlet and leave it disconnected for at least 60 seconds. This clears the internal capacitor and resets the control board. Plug it back in and attempt to use the remote again.
- Test the Physical Buttons: If the remote still fails but the on-unit power button works, the remote's internal PCB may be damaged. If you have a multimeter, check for continuity across the button pads when pressed; if the circuit doesn't close, the remote requires replacement.

- Battery Quality: Avoid using generic or "no-name" coin cells. Dyson remotes are sensitive to voltage drops; stick to Panasonic, Energizer, or Duracell CR2032s for consistent performance.
- Storage Tip: The remote is designed to be magnetically docked on top of the TP04. Always store it here to prevent it from being stepped on or lost, which is the primary cause of internal switch failure.
- Avoid Liquids: Never use liquid cleaners directly on the remote buttons. If the remote gets sticky, use a damp cloth only; liquid seeping into the casing will corrode the PCB traces and permanently kill the remote.
