Yeah, this one's common and usually means something is obstructing the scanner carriage. It's a flatbed scanner with a CIS photo sensor that moves underneath the glass.
First, power the printer off completely. Open the scanner lid and check the glass bed. Remove any small objects, paper bits, or staples. Look around the edges of the glass inside the printer for any obstruction. Gently wipe the glass with a soft, lint-free cloth.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK: The noise could be from the mechanism itself if it's dry or damaged. The sound level during operation is rated at 52 dB(A) for pressure, so a grinding sound is definitely not normal. Try running a simple copy from the printer's own panel to see if the noise persists during the scan phase of copying.
HEADS UP: If the noise continues after clearing any obstructions, stop using the scanner. The 2-year limited warranty covers this. Contact Epson for service, as forcing it could cause further damage.
