first batch of ice tastes terrible, like plastic or chemicals, is it safe?

DIAGNOSIS This is normal for the initial cycles. It's not harmful chemicals, but the taste of manufacturing oils and residues from new plastic and silicone components inside the water system.

FIX You must flush the system thoroughly before consuming any ice.

1. Fill the reservoir with fresh cold water to the MAX line.
2. Run the ice maker through a complete cycle (about 6-10 minutes) until it dumps the first batch of ice into the basket.
3. Discard this entire first batch. Do not taste it.
4. Repeat the process: fill with fresh water, run a cycle, and discard the ice. Do this 2-3 more times.
5. Ice from the fourth cycle onward should taste clean and neutral.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If a plastic taste persists, clean the unit with the vinegar solution as described in the cleaning question. This will help remove any stubborn residues. Also, ensure you're using cold, filtered water if your tap water has a strong taste.

HEADS UP Never use the ice from the very first 2-3 cycles. Always complete the flush process outlined in the Quick Start guide. The unit is not defective; this is a standard break-in procedure for all new countertop ice makers.
