Diagnosis
Your Hawkins Contura pressure cooker is hissing and leaking steam from the sides because the pressure seal has been compromised. This is almost always caused by the sealing ring (gasket) not forming an airtight lock between the lid and the pot body. The ring can become misaligned, dirty, hardened with age, or have food particles stuck to it.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to restore the seal:
- Let the cooker cool completely and release all pressure.
- Remove the lid and take out the black rubber sealing ring from its groove in the lid.
- Wash the ring thoroughly in warm, soapy water, checking for and removing any tiny food debris. Dry it completely.
- Reinstall the ring, ensuring it is seated perfectly flat and even all the way around the lid's channel. It should not be twisted or pinched.
- Before locking the lid, place it on the pot and gently rotate it left and right to center it perfectly on the body. Then lock it securely.
If That Didn't Work
If cleaning and reseating didn't stop the leak:
- Reposition the Ring: Remove the ring and flip it over (invert it), or rotate it to a different position in its groove. This can present a fresh sealing surface.
- Check for Damage: Inspect the ring closely for permanent cracks, splits, or a loss of elasticity. If it feels hard or brittle, it has perished.
- Replace the Sealing Ring: A hardened or damaged ring cannot seal. You must replace it with a genuine Hawkins Contura 3-litre sealing ring. Also, check the lid's safety plug (the small rubber piece in the center of the lid) for damage and replace if necessary.
Heads Up
Never force the lid closed if it's not aligning easily, as this can damage the ring or the lid's locking mechanism. Always ensure the rim of the pot and the lid are clean before locking. A properly functioning Hawkins cooker should be silent during the pressure build-up phase, with steam only venting in a controlled stream from the weight regulator, not from the sides.
