Diagnosis
The most common reason a Hawkins Contura pressure cooker lid won't lock is improper lid alignment. The lid's sealing ring must sit perfectly flush on the pot's rim. If it's even slightly off-center, the handles won't meet, and the locking mechanism won't engage. A less common cause is food debris or grease on the sealing ring or the pot rim, preventing a proper seal, or a worn or mis-seated sealing ring.
How to Fix It
First, ensure the cooker is cool and depressurized. Follow these steps:
- Place the lid on the pot. Do not force it.
- Visually check that the lid is centered. The black sealing ring should be evenly visible all around the inner rim of the pot.
- If misaligned, lift and rotate the lid slightly before setting it down again.
- To latch, squeeze the handles together at their outer ends (farthest from the pot). This provides the best leverage. The lid should click into place.
- If it still won't lock, remove the lid. Clean the sealing ring and the pot's rim with warm, soapy water to remove any residue. Ensure the sealing ring is correctly seated in its groove on the underside of the lid.
If That Didn't Work
If perfect alignment and cleaning don't work, inspect the sealing ring for permanent damage, cracks, or loss of elasticity. A hardened or deformed ring will prevent sealing. Replace it with a genuine Hawkins Contura sealing ring. Also, check for any visible obstructions or damage to the locking pins or slots on the handles. Avoid forcing the mechanism, as this can damage it.

Never attempt to use the pressure cooker if the lid does not lock securely. A lid that is not properly sealed will not build pressure and poses a safety risk. Always ensure the pressure release valve is clear and the lid is correctly aligned before each use.
