Diagnosis
The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M234dwe is a "cloud-connected" device, meaning many of its settings are tied to the HP+ service and the HP Smart account. When users experience connectivity loops, "Printer Offline" errors, or ownership transfer issues, a standard soft reset often fails because the printer retains its association with the previous account and the specific network SSID in its non-volatile RAM (NVRAM). A full factory reset is necessary when the Embedded Web Server (EWS) is unreachable or when the printer refuses to enter "Setup Mode" for a new user. If the printer is stuck in a state where it cannot connect to Wi-Fi, you cannot use the EWS method because the EWS requires an active network connection to function. You must determine if you have network access to the printer; if you do, the EWS is the cleanest route. If you don't, you must trigger a hardware-level reset to wipe the network stack and the internal configuration files.
How to Fix It
To perform a comprehensive factory reset that wipes all custom settings, network credentials, and account links, follow these precise steps based on your current access level: **Method 1: The Embedded Web Server (EWS) - Use if the printer is currently online**
- Find the printer's IP address by pressing the "Information" button (i) on the control panel to print a configuration page.
- Open a web browser on a computer connected to the same network and type that IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.15) into the address bar.
- Navigate to the System tab located in the top navigation menu.
- On the left-hand sidebar, click on Service.
- Locate the Restore Defaults section and click the Restore defaults button.
- Confirm the action when prompted. The printer will automatically reboot, and all settings will return to the factory state.
- Turn the printer on and wait for it to reach a ready state.
- Press and hold the Power button to turn the printer off.
- While the printer is off, press and hold the Wireless button and the Cancel (X) button simultaneously.
- While continuing to hold those two buttons, press the Power button to turn the unit back on.
- Continue holding the Wireless and Cancel buttons for exactly 10 seconds after the power light begins to blink.
- Release the buttons. The printer will now initialize a full NVRAM wipe and restart in Setup Mode (indicated by a pulsing purple light on the front bar).
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Semi-Full Reset via the Hidden Menu: If the buttons aren't triggering, turn the printer on and quickly press the "Back" arrow, the "Cancel" (X) button, and the "Home" button in rapid succession. This can sometimes force a menu to appear that allows "Restore Factory Defaults" directly from the small LCD screen.
- Reset the HP Smart Account Link: Because the M234dwe is an 'e' series printer, it is permanently linked to an HP account. If the reset doesn't allow a new user to add it, log into the HP Smart app on a mobile device, remove the printer from your account, and then perform the hardware reset again.
- Power Cycle the Network Gateway: Sometimes the printer isn't the problem, but the router is holding a "ghost" IP reservation for the printer. Unplug your router for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and then attempt the Hardware Reset method again to ensure a clean DHCP handshake.
- Update Firmware via USB: If the printer is stuck in a boot loop after a reset, download the latest firmware from the HP support site and install it via a USB cable connection. This overwrites corrupted system files that a factory reset cannot touch.
Heads Up
- HP+ Permanent Lock: Be aware that if this printer was activated with HP+, the "Instant Ink" requirement is hard-coded. A factory reset will NOT remove the requirement for an internet connection or the restriction against using non-HP branded toner cartridges.
- Setup Mode Window: After a successful reset, the printer only stays in "Setup Mode" for two hours. If you do not complete the HP Smart app pairing within this window, you will have to repeat the hardware reset.
- IP Conflict: After restoring defaults, your router may assign a different IP address. Always print a new Network Configuration page to verify the new IP before attempting to access the EWS again.
- Avoid Power Interruptions: Never pull the power cord while the "Restore Defaults" process is running, as this can corrupt the firmware and lead to a "Permanent Storage Error" which requires a motherboard replacement.
