my hp laserjet m234dwe won't pick up any paper, just makes a grinding noise. help?

— asked by Jenna

The pickup roller is dirty. Dirt and dust prevent the roller from gripping the paper.

Clean the pickup roller.

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the back.
  2. Remove all paper from the input tray.
  3. Flip the printer on its side.
  4. Release the blue latch, hold onto it, and remove the panel.
  5. Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with alcohol or water. Wipe each roller with moderate pressure.
  6. Wait 10 minutes for the rollers to dry completely.
  7. While holding the blue latch, align and insert the panel. Release the latch to lock it.
  8. Flip the printer back upright.
  9. Reload the paper and plug the printer back in.

If that didn't work: The paper itself might be the issue. Use only paper that meets HP specifications: good quality, free of dust, cuts, or curls, and designed for laser printers. Do not use paper that is too rough or contains metallic material like glitter.

Heads up: Always unplug the printer before performing any internal cleaning. Never use sharp objects to clean the rollers.
