Diagnosis
The blinking purple LED on the Linksys Velop MX5300 indicates that the node is in "Setup Mode." This means the device is broadcasting its setup SSID and is waiting for the Linksys app to assign it a role (either as the Parent node or a Child node) within your mesh network. When this happens after a power cycle, it typically signifies a "handshake failure" where the node has lost its cached configuration and can no longer authenticate with the primary gateway. This state often occurs because of a corrupted NVRAM state or a synchronization error between the node and the cloud account. If the node remains purple for over an hour, it has failed to automatically rejoin the mesh. This is common if the node was moved too far from the parent node during the unplugging process or if there was a power surge that wiped the local configuration settings, forcing the hardware back into its factory-default discovery state.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must perform a hard factory reset to clear the corrupted state and then re-provision the node through the app. Follow these exact steps:
- Ensure the MX5300 node is plugged into a power outlet and has been powered on for at least 2 minutes.
- Locate the Reset button on the bottom of the node. It is a small, recessed pinhole button.
- Using a straightened paperclip or a SIM-eject tool, press and hold the Reset button.
- Continue holding the button for a full 10 to 15 seconds. Watch the LED light carefully; do not release the button until the light turns a solid color or turns off completely and then begins to flash purple again.
- Release the button and wait 3-5 minutes for the node to fully boot. The light should now be blinking purple steadily, indicating it is ready for a fresh pairing.
- Open the Linksys app on your mobile device. Navigate to the "Menu" (three horizontal lines) and select "Set Up a New Node."
- Follow the on-screen prompts to add the node back to your existing mesh. Ensure your phone is connected to the primary node's WiFi during this process.
If That Didn't Work
- Wired Backhaul Provisioning: If the wireless pairing fails, use an Ethernet cable to connect the blinking purple node directly to the Parent node's LAN port. Once connected via wire, attempt the "Add a Node" process in the app. Once the light turns solid blue, you can unplug the Ethernet cable and move the node to its permanent wireless location.
- Power Cycle the Gateway: Sometimes the Parent node refuses to "accept" the Child node. Unplug the power from your modem and the primary Velop node. Wait 60 seconds. Plug in the modem first, wait for a full internet sync, then plug in the primary node. Once the primary is solid blue, try the setup process for the purple node again.
- Clear App Cache: The Linksys app can occasionally hang on a previous session. Force-close the app, clear the application cache in your phone's settings, or uninstall and reinstall the app. Log back into your account and attempt the node addition again.
- Distance Calibration: If you are attempting to pair the node in its final room, move it to the same room as the Parent node (within 3-5 feet). Complete the setup process where the light turns solid blue, then physically relocate the node to its intended destination.
Heads Up
- Placement Rule: For the MX5300, ensure child nodes are placed no more than two walls away from the parent node to avoid "node drops" that trigger the purple setup light.
- Firmware Mismatch: If the node refuses to join, check the app for a firmware update on the Parent node. A version mismatch between the gateway and the child node can prevent pairing.
- Power Stability: Avoid plugging the Velop nodes into low-quality power strips or surge protectors that may cause voltage drops, as this can lead to spontaneous resets and the blinking purple state.
