As the MX5300 manages high-throughput WiFi 6 traffic, the power draw fluctuates rapidly, causing the copper coils to physically vibrate against their housings due to the changing magnetic fields. This is not a sign of a failing capacitor or a short circuit, but rather a byproduct of the specific tolerances of the electronic components used in that production batch. You can confirm this is coil whine if the pitch changes slightly when you initiate a high-bandwidth activity, such as a 4K stream or a large file download, or if the noise vanishes when the node is idle. Because the MX5300 uses a compact form factor with dense internal components, these vibrations are often amplified by the plastic chassis acting as a sounding board.
How to Fix It
While coil whine is a hardware characteristic and cannot be "repaired" via software, you can significantly mitigate the audible noise by stabilizing the power delivery and changing the acoustic environment. Follow these steps:
