Diagnosis
The Linksys Velop MX5300 uses a USB 3.0 port primarily for network-attached storage (NAS) and file sharing. Because the router maintains an active index of the files on the drive and manages read/write permissions for connected devices, physically pulling the drive while the system is accessing data can lead to directory corruption, file loss, or "ghost" drives appearing in your network map.
How to Fix It
To safely unmount the drive and prevent data corruption, follow these steps:
- Launch the Linksys App on your mobile device and ensure you are logged into your account.
- Navigate to the External Storage menu located within the network settings.
- Identify the specific node to which the USB drive is physically attached and verify that no active file transfers are currently in progress.
- Select the Eject option. This command tells the router to flush the write cache and terminate all active connections to the drive.
- Wait for the app to confirm that the drive has been successfully unmounted.
- Physically disconnect the USB drive from the USB 3.0 port on the back of the node.
If That Didn't Work
If the app freezes or reports that the drive "cannot be ejected because it is in use," try the following:
- Disconnect all client devices (laptops, tablets) that are currently accessing the shared folders.
- Restart the Velop node by unplugging the power cable for 30 seconds and plugging it back in. Once the system reboots, attempt the ejection process via the app again before any devices reconnect to the share.
Heads Up
The USB port on the MX5300 is designed strictly for basic file sharing; it does not support advanced media server protocols or FTP. For security, always configure a unique username and password in the External Storage settings to prevent unauthorized users on your WiFi from accessing your private files.
