Diagnosis
The Nest Thermostat E is fundamentally different from your old battery-operated thermostat. Traditional thermostats act as simple switches, using batteries to power a basic screen and relay. The Nest E, however, is a computer that requires a constant 24V AC power supply to maintain its Wi-Fi connection, backlit display, and software processing. When you see the "No power to Rh wire" error despite your heat working, it means the thermostat is unable to "steal" enough power from the heating circuit to keep its internal battery charged. This happens because the Nest E attempts a process called "power sharing," where it draws a small amount of electricity from the Rh wire even when the heat is off. In many older HVAC systems, the furnace control board or the wiring insulation prevents this current from flowing back to the thermostat. Because the Nest cannot maintain a stable voltage, it triggers a power error. You can confirm this by checking the "Technical Info" menu under "Power"; if the Vin or Lin readings are fluctuating or below 3.6V, the device is starving for power.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must provide a dedicated 24V path known as a Common (C) wire. This completes the electrical circuit, allowing the Nest to draw power without relying on the heating relay.
- Shut off power to your HVAC system at the breaker box to avoid blowing a fuse on the control board.
- Remove the Nest E display from the base and inspect the wire bundle behind the wall. Look for an unused blue or black wire that was tucked away; this is often a pre-run C-wire.
- If a wire exists, strip 3/8" of insulation and insert it into the 'C' terminal on the Nest base.
- Go to your furnace/air handler. Open the panel to locate the control board. Find the terminal strip where the thermostat wires connect.
- Locate the terminal labeled 'C' or 'COM'. If the blue/black wire from the wall is not connected here, strip the end and secure it to the C terminal using a wire nut or screw terminal.
- Ensure the Rh wire is securely fastened to the 'R' or 'Rh' terminal on the furnace board.
- Restore power at the breaker and snap the Nest display back onto the base.
- Navigate to Settings > Equipment and verify that the 'C' wire is now detected as "Connected."
If That Didn't Work
- Install a Nest Power Connector: If you cannot run a new wire through your walls, purchase the official Nest Power Connector (model G42-B01). This device installs directly at the furnace control board and mimics a C-wire by managing the power draw, preventing the "No power to Rh" error without requiring a new wire run.
- Use a 24V AC Plug-in Transformer: If you have an outlet near the thermostat, buy a 24V AC adapter. Run the two wires from the adapter to the 'C' and 'Rc' terminals on the Nest base. Note: If you do this, move your existing heating wire to 'Rh' so the power and heating circuits remain separate.
- Check the Furnace Fuse: Inspect the 3amp or 5amp blade fuse on your furnace's integrated circuit board. If you accidentally touched the Rh wire to a ground wire during installation, the fuse may have popped. A blown fuse will cause the Nest to report no power even if the wiring is correct.
- Test with a Multimeter: Set your meter to AC voltage. Touch one probe to the Rh wire and one to the C wire (or a grounded metal part of the furnace chassis). You should read between 24V and 28V. If you read 0V, the issue is a failed transformer in the furnace, not a thermostat setting.
Heads Up
- Avoid "Power Stealing" Long-term: Even if the heat works temporarily without a C-wire, the Nest battery will eventually drain, causing the thermostat to disconnect from Wi-Fi or reboot randomly during a heating cycle.
- Wire Gauge Matters: Ensure you are using 18-gauge thermostat wire. Using thinner telephone or security wire can cause voltage drops that trigger power errors.
- Tighten Connections: Ensure no bare copper is exposed outside the terminals; a single stray strand of wire touching the base can cause a short circuit that trips your furnace's safety switch.
- Firmware Updates: Once power is stabilized, immediately check for a software update in the settings menu, as newer versions include better power management for older HVAC systems.
