The "Delayed" message on a Nest Thermostat E is not an error code, but a safety state. This occurs when the thermostat has sent a signal to the furnace to ignite, but the furnace has failed to respond or the system is implementing a "short-cycle protection" timer. This is designed to prevent the heat exchanger from cracking due to rapid heating and cooling cycles, or to prevent the burners from accumulating unburnt gas if ignition fails. When you see this for over two hours, it indicates a "hard lockout." The Nest E is waiting for the furnace's internal control board to reset. If the furnace doesn't fire, the Nest assumes the system is malfunctioning and refuses to send another request to avoid damaging the equipment. To confirm the root cause, check if your furnace blower is running without heat; if the fan is blowing cold air while the Nest says "Delayed," the furnace has likely entered a lockout state due to a failed ignition attempt (often caused by a dirty flame sensor or a blocked intake). If nothing is happening at all, the issue is likely a power delivery failure between the thermostat and the furnace control board.
How to Fix It
To resolve a persistent delay and force the system to reboot, follow these precise steps:
- Power Cycle the Furnace: Locate the electrical switch (usually a toggle switch on the side of the furnace or a dedicated breaker in your main panel). Flip it OFF for exactly 60 seconds. This clears the volatile memory on the furnace control board and resets the lockout timer.
- Inspect the Furnace LED: Flip the power back ON. Immediately open the lower blower compartment door. Look for a small LED light on the control board (usually red or green). If it is blinking, count the number of flashes. For example, 3 blinks on many common brands indicate a pressure switch failure or a flame sensor issue.
- Verify Thermostat Wiring: Remove the Nest E display from the base. Ensure the R (Power) and W (Heat) wires are stripped to exactly 3/8 of an inch and are inserted fully into the connectors. If the W wire is loose, the Nest cannot trigger the furnace.
- Override the Delay: On the Nest E, go to Settings > Equipment > Heat. Ensure the heat source is correctly identified (e.g., Gas, Electric, or Oil). If it is set to "Electric" but you have a gas furnace, the timing cycles will be incorrect.
- Test the Ignition: Set the temperature to 5 degrees above the current room temperature. Wait for the "Delayed" message to disappear. If it reappears immediately, the furnace is detecting a hardware fault and shutting itself down for safety.
If That Didn't Work
- Clean the Flame Sensor: This is the most common cause of "Delayed" heat. Locate the thin metal rod (flame sensor) sitting in the path of the burner flame. Use a piece of fine sandpaper or a scouring pad to gently rub the carbon buildup off the rod. Even a microscopic layer of oxidation can prevent the furnace from sensing the flame, triggering a lockout.
- Check the C-Wire Connection: Nest E models often "power steal" from the Rh wire. If your furnace doesn't provide enough current, the thermostat may trigger the heat but fail to maintain the connection, causing the system to cycle off and enter a delay. Install a Nest Power Connector or a dedicated 24V C-wire to stabilize power.
- Inspect the Air Filter: A severely clogged filter restricts airflow, causing the heat exchanger to overheat. The furnace's internal "limit switch" will then trip, shutting down the burners to prevent a fire and leaving the Nest in a "Delayed" state. Replace the filter with a fresh one and try again.
- Test the Furnace Manually: If you are comfortable, you can jump the R and W terminals on the furnace control board using a small piece of insulated wire. If the furnace fires immediately, the problem is the Nest E or the wiring. If it still doesn't fire, the problem is internal to the furnace (e.g., a failed igniter or gas valve).

- Avoid Constant Temp Adjustments: Rapidly changing the target temperature on the Nest E can trigger the "Short Cycle Protection" delay. Set your desired temperature and leave it for at least 15 minutes.
- Battery Drain: If the Nest E battery is critically low, it may struggle to trigger the relay for the furnace. Ensure the display is firmly seated on the base to allow for proper charging.
- Seasonal Maintenance: Always clean your flame sensor and replace your air filters every 90 days to prevent the furnace from entering safety lockout modes during peak winter months.
- Voltage Warning: Never apply 120V power to the Nest E terminals. It is a low-voltage (24V) device; applying high voltage will permanently fry the control board.
