The faint, rhythmic clicking sound emanating from your Nest Thermostat E when the heat is off is the sound of the internal mechanical relays cycling. These relays act as electrical switches that open and close the circuit to your HVAC system. When the thermostat "clicks" without actually triggering the furnace or boiler, it means the device is attempting to engage the heating circuit but is failing to maintain a stable electrical connection or is experiencing a "power cycling" event due to insufficient voltage.
This most commonly occurs because the Nest Thermostat E lacks a dedicated "C-wire" (Common wire) for constant power. Instead, it relies on "power stealing," where it draws a small amount of current from the heating or cooling wires while the system is off. If your HVAC system's control board has a high resistance or if the wiring is aged, the Nest cannot steal enough power to keep its internal battery charged. As the battery dips below a critical threshold, the relay triggers a request for power; once it gets a tiny burst, it shuts off, creating a repetitive clicking loop every few minutes.
How to Fix It
To resolve the clicking caused by power instability, you must verify the power readings and then implement a hardware solution to provide constant 24V AC power.
- Press the thermostat ring to open the main menu. Navigate to Settings > Technical Info > Power.
- Note the values for Lin, Vin, and Iin. If your Lin (current) is below 20mA or Vin (voltage) is fluctuating significantly below 3.6V, the device is power-starved.
- Turn off the breaker to your HVAC system to prevent shorting the control board.
- Remove the Nest display from the base. Inspect the wires; if you see an unused blue or black wire tucked into the wall, this is likely your C-wire.
- Strip the end of that wire and insert it into the C terminal on the Nest base.
- Go to your furnace/air handler control board. Locate the terminal strip. Find the wire that matches the color of the one you just connected to the Nest and secure it to the C terminal on the furnace board.
- Restore power and check the Technical Info menu again. The clicking should cease immediately as the device no longer needs to "steal" power.
If That Didn't Work
- Install a Nest Power Connector: If you have no spare wires in your wall, purchase the official Nest Power Connector (model G476). This installs at the furnace end and mimics a C-wire by adding a shunt to the R and W wires, providing the necessary return path for electricity without requiring you to fish new wires through your walls.
- Check for "Short Cycling" in the HVAC Unit: The clicking may actually be coming from the furnace's control board rather than the thermostat. Check if your furnace filter is clogged. A restricted airflow can cause the furnace to overheat and shut down prematurely, sending a signal back to the Nest that causes the relay to reset.
- Test with a Different Power Supply: If you are using a plug-in 24V transformer instead of furnace power, ensure the transformer is rated for at least 40VA. Undersized transformers often cause voltage drops that trigger the relay clicking.
- Verify Wire Integrity: Inspect the copper ends of the wires inserted into the Nest base. If the copper is oxidized or bent, the connection is unstable. Trim 1/4 inch off the wire, strip it fresh, and re-insert it to ensure a tight mechanical fit.
Heads Up
- Avoid "C-Wire" Adapters from Third Parties: Stick to the official Nest Power Connector or a genuine C-wire. Generic adapters can introduce electrical noise that interferes with the Nest E's sensitive sensors.
- Battery Depletion Warning: If you ignore the clicking, the internal lithium-ion battery may eventually drop too low to recover, resulting in a "Low Battery" error code (e.g., E73 or E74) and a complete system shutdown.
- Voltage Danger: Always shut off the HVAC breaker before touching the control board. Even 24V AC can blow a 3-amp or 5-amp fuse on your furnace board if a wire accidentally touches the chassis.
- Firmware Updates: Ensure your Nest is connected to Wi-Fi. Google occasionally releases software updates that optimize the power-stealing algorithm to reduce relay cycling in C-wire-less homes.
