Diagnosis
Smoke leak at the hinge indicates the dome-to-base seal is compromised. The band clamp tension is incorrect or the felt gasket is damaged/misaligned.
How to Fix It
First, check gasket alignment. The gasket must be centered on the ceramic mating edge, not hanging over. If aligned, re-tension the band clamp. Loosen the four hinge bolts slightly. Have an assistant close the dome. Tighten the two rear band clamp bolts first, to 18 ft-lbs. Then tighten the two front band clamp bolts to 18 ft-lbs. Finally, re-tighten the hinge bolts.
If That Didn't Work
The gasket may be faulty or glue failed. Perform a 'dollar bill test'. Close the dome on a dollar bill at the leak point. If you can pull the bill out with little resistance, the seal is bad. Replace the felt gasket (Part # KJ-160400).
Heads Up
Some initial smoke seepage during the first few high-heat fires is normal as the gasket cures. Persistent leaks after 3-4 cooks require this fix. Do not use aftermarket fiberglass gaskets; they cannot handle the Kontrol Tower's proximity.
