Diagnosis
The humming sound you hear is the vibration of the high-pressure pump running "dry." In the Nespresso Vertuo Pop Plus Deluxe, this is almost always caused by an airlock within the thermoblock heating element. When the machine is brand new or has been sitting empty, air pockets become trapped in the narrow internal tubing. Because air is compressible and water is not, the pump spins rapidly but cannot create enough suction to pull the water from the reservoir into the heating chamber.
You can confirm this is an airlock if the pump sound is high-pitched and consistent, but the spout remains completely dry. If you see a blinking orange light or a specific error code on the top button, the machine may have timed out because it detected no water flow for a set period. This is a mechanical vacuum issue, not an electrical failure; the pump is functioning, it just lacks the prime necessary to push the liquid through the system.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must manually force the pump to overcome the air pocket. Follow these exact steps to prime the system:
- Fill the water tank to the maximum line with room-temperature filtered water. Ensure the tank is seated firmly into the base; if it is tilted by even a few millimeters, the intake valve won't seal, and the pump will continue to suck air.
- Place a large container (at least 500ml) directly under the coffee outlet to catch the initial burst of air and water.
- Lock the machine head and close the lever firmly.
- Press and hold the brew button down for a full 10 to 15 seconds without releasing. Do not simply click it once. Holding the button overrides the standard capsule-reading cycle and forces the pump to run continuously.
- Listen for a distinct change in the pump's pitch. The humming will typically shift from a high-pitched whine to a deeper, gurgling sound. This indicates the air bubble has been pushed through.
- As soon as water begins to sputter or stream from the spout, release the button.
- Run two additional "cleaning cycles" (pressing the button three times rapidly to trigger the cleaning mode) to ensure all trapped air is purged from the internal lines.
If That Didn't Work
If the manual prime fails to produce water, try these alternative solutions:
- The Tank Seal Reset: Remove the water tank and inspect the small rubber O-ring/valve at the bottom. If there is a piece of debris or a hair caught in the seal, the pump will suck air from the gap instead of water from the tank. Clean the valve with a damp cloth, dry it, and slam the tank firmly into the base to create a vacuum seal.
- The "Water Boost" Method: Fill the tank with warm (not boiling) water. Warm water is slightly less viscous and can sometimes help the pump catch a prime more easily than ice-cold water. Attempt the 15-second hold again with the warmed water.
- The Head-Pressure Trick: Open the machine head, then close it and lock it with significant force. Sometimes the internal valve only opens fully when the locking mechanism is completely engaged. If the head is slightly ajar, the pump may run but the internal bypass valve will prevent water from reaching the spout.
- Air Bubble Displacement: Gently lift the water tank up and down rapidly while the pump is humming. This creates a momentary pressure fluctuation in the reservoir that can "push" the water into the intake valve and break the airlock.

Keep these maintenance tips in mind to prevent future airlocks:
- Avoid Running Dry: Never let the water tank drop completely empty during a brew cycle. If the pump sucks air mid-cycle, you will have to repeat the priming process.
- Weekly Descaling: Use the official Nespresso descaling solution every 3 months or 300 capsules. Mineral buildup in the thermoblock can restrict flow, making the pump work harder and increasing the likelihood of air pockets.
- Water Quality: Use filtered water to prevent calcium carbonate flakes from clogging the narrow intake valve, which is a common cause of "phantom" airlocks.
- Storage: If you plan to leave the machine unused for more than two weeks, empty the tank and run a final brew cycle to clear the lines, but be prepared to prime the machine again upon return.
