This barcode tells the machine exactly how much water to pump and at what temperature. When the machine consistently produces a short, ristretto-style shot regardless of the capsule inserted (whether it's a 7.77oz Coffee or a 2.3oz Double Espresso), it indicates a "read error" where the optical lens is obscured. The root cause is typically a buildup of coffee oils, dried residue, or "coffee mist" that accumulates on the clear plastic lens during the extraction process. When the sensor cannot clearly resolve the barcode, the machine defaults to a failsafe minimum volume to prevent over-extraction or overflow, resulting in the tiny amount of coffee you are seeing. You can confirm this is the issue if the machine does not throw a specific error light but simply terminates the brew cycle prematurely across all different pod types.
How to Fix It
To resolve the sensor obstruction and restore correct volume dosing, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the machine completely and unplug it from the wall outlet to ensure no electrical activity during cleaning.
- Unlock the machine by sliding the lever to the open position and lift the brewing head fully.
- Locate the optical reader: it is the small, clear plastic dome/lens situated on the underside of the brewing head, positioned directly above where the capsule rim sits.
- Dampen a high-quality, lint-free microfiber cloth with distilled water. Avoid using paper towels, as they can leave microscopic fibers on the lens that further obstruct the sensor.
- Gently wipe the lens in a circular motion, ensuring you remove all oily residue. If there is stubborn, dried coffee crust, use a cotton swab dipped in a mixture of 50% white vinegar and 50% water to dissolve the mineral deposits.
- Dry the lens thoroughly with a clean, dry section of the microfiber cloth. Ensure there are no streaks or fingerprints left behind, as the sensor is hypersensitive to surface imperfections.
- Close the head, lock the lever, and perform a "cleaning cycle" by inserting a cleaning capsule or running a brew cycle with no capsule (if your model allows) to flush the system.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Factory Reset: If the sensor is clean but the software is glitching, reset the machine. Press the button 5 times quickly within 3 seconds. The light will blink to confirm the reset, which clears the temporary cache of capsule readings.

- Inspect the Capsule Holder: Ensure the capsule is seating perfectly flat. If the holder is warped or has debris at the bottom, the capsule will sit at an angle, preventing the lens from aligning with the barcode. Use a toothbrush to scrub the base of the capsule chamber.

- Avoid using chemical glass cleaners or ammonia-based products on the optical lens, as these can cloud the plastic over time, leading to permanent read errors.
- Always use distilled or filtered water in the reservoir to prevent calcium buildup on the sensor lens, which is the primary cause of this specific failure.
- Check the capsule rim for "coffee bloom" or leakage; if coffee leaks from the top of the pod during brewing, it will instantly coat the lens in oil, requiring a cleaning every few uses.
