Diagnosis
The three green blinking lights on the Nespresso Vertuo Pop Plus Deluxe indicate a "Capsule Recognition Failure." Unlike the Original line, the Vertuo system relies on a barcode reader located in the brewing head. When you close the lever, the machine spins the capsule to scan the rim for a specific barcode that tells the machine the exact water volume and temperature required for that specific blend. If the sensor cannot read this code, it triggers the triple-blink error to prevent the machine from brewing a generic (and likely ruined) cup of coffee.
This failure typically occurs for one of three reasons: the capsule is not seated perfectly flat in the holder, preventing the rotation mechanism from spinning it correctly; there is a buildup of coffee oils or dried residue on the optical lens of the barcode reader; or the capsule rim is slightly deformed, meaning the barcode is physically obscured or damaged. You can confirm this is a reading error if the machine makes a brief "whirring" sound (the attempt to spin the pod) immediately before the three green blinks occur.
How to Fix It
To resolve the recognition error and restore brewing functionality, follow these precise steps:
- Unlock the machine by sliding the lever to the open position and lifting the brewing head fully.
- Remove the current capsule and discard it. Inspect the capsule holder for any stray coffee grounds or small pieces of aluminum foil that may be preventing the capsule from sitting flush.
- Locate the barcode reader—this is the small, clear optical window located on the underside of the brewing head. Use a clean, damp (not dripping) microfiber cloth to gently wipe this lens. Do not use chemical cleaners or abrasive sponges, as scratching the lens will permanently disable the machine's ability to read pods.
- Check the "centering" of the pod holder. Ensure the capsule holder is snapped firmly into its base and isn't wobbling.
- Insert a brand new capsule. Ensure it is pushed down firmly and centered perfectly in the holder. If the pod is tilted even slightly, the rotation mechanism will jam.
- Close the brewing head and slide the locking lever firmly into the locked position.
- Press the brew button once. The machine should now spin the capsule for 1-2 seconds and then begin the extraction process.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Reset: Unplug the Vertuo Pop Plus Deluxe from the wall outlet for exactly 60 seconds. While unplugged, press and hold the brew button for 10 seconds to discharge remaining capacitors. Plug it back in and attempt to brew again. This clears the temporary memory of the sensor error.
- Deep Clean the Piercing Needles: If the pod is being read but the water isn't flowing, there may be a blockage in the needle assembly. Use a thin sewing needle or a dedicated cleaning tool to gently clear the exit holes in the brewing head. A blockage can sometimes trick the sensor into thinking the pod isn't properly engaged.
- Test with a Different Pod Type: Try a different capsule size (e.g., switch from a Double Espresso to a Mug). If the machine reads one size but not the other, the issue is likely a deformed batch of capsules rather than a hardware failure in the machine.
- Descale the Internal Plumbing: If the machine is struggling to build pressure, it can occasionally trigger a sensor error. Run a full descaling cycle using Nespresso-approved descaling solution to ensure no calcium buildup is interfering with the internal pump's ability to rotate the pod.
Heads Up
- Never use third-party "refilled" capsules or aluminum foil wraps. The barcode reader is extremely sensitive; if the barcode is printed incorrectly or the rim is slightly bent, the machine will enter the three-blink error loop.
- Avoid using a sponge with a scrubbing surface on the optical lens, as micro-scratches will cause the machine to misread pods intermittently.
- Always ensure the water tank is seated firmly. If the tank is loose, the machine may occasionally glitch and throw a recognition error instead of a "low water" warning.
- Wipe the rim of the capsule holder every 20-30 brews to prevent coffee "sludge" from building up, which can prevent the capsule from sitting perfectly flat.
