If the water is too warm or the internal cooling system cannot reach the necessary sub-zero temperature quickly enough, the ice doesn't bond into a solid mass before the auger pushes it through the extrusion plate. This results in a "snow-cone" consistency rather than the desired "chewable" nugget. This issue is typically caused by one of three factors: high inlet water temperature, excessive ambient room heat preventing the condenser from shedding heat, or a buildup of mineral scale on the evaporator cylinder. When the cylinder is coated in calcium or lime deposits, it creates a thermal barrier that slows down the freezing process, meaning the ice is only partially frozen when it is ejected. You can confirm this by checking if the machine is running longer than usual between batches or if you see white, chalky residue on the interior walls.
How to Fix It
To restore the production of solid nugget ice, follow these precise steps to optimize the thermal environment and clean the freezing surface:
- Temperature Reset: Empty the ice basket and drain all remaining water from the reservoir. Refill the reservoir using filtered water that has been chilled in the refrigerator to approximately 40°F (4°C). This reduces the energy load on the compressor and allows the ice to flash-freeze into solid nuggets.
- Relocate for Airflow: Ensure the machine is placed on a hard, flat surface with at least 6 inches of open space on all sides and the rear. If the machine is tucked under a cabinet or against a wall, the condenser coils cannot dissipate heat, raising the internal temperature and resulting in slushy ice.
- Deep Descale Cycle: Fill the reservoir with a mixture of 1 part white distilled vinegar and 3 parts warm water. Activate the "Self-Cleaning" function by holding the designated button for 5 seconds. - Verify Room Humidity: In extremely humid environments, condensation can build up on the exterior of the cooling cylinder, creating a layer of liquid water that prevents the ice from adhering properly. Use a dehumidifier in the room to see if ice quality improves.
- Assess Refrigerant Leakage: If the machine is running constantly but the ice remains slushy despite chilled water and a clean cylinder, the refrigerant may have leaked. Check the rear coils; if they are cold to the touch while the machine is running, the compressor is failing to move heat effectively.
