The loud grinding or rattling noise occurring during the harvest cycle of the EUHOMY Nugget Ice Maker is typically caused by a mechanical obstruction within the evaporator cylinder. In this specific model, the harvest cycle involves a rotating auger (the spiral screw) that scrapes frozen ice off the inner walls of the cylinder to push it out of the dispensing chute. When a "bridge" of ice forms—where a chunk of ice freezes in an irregular shape or becomes wedged—the auger continues to rotate against the obstruction, creating a high-pitched grinding or metallic rattling sound. This issue is often exacerbated by mineral buildup (limescale) from hard water. Calcium and magnesium deposits create a rough surface on the cylinder walls, increasing friction and making it easier for ice shards to snag. If the noise is rhythmic and coincides with the rotation of the motor, it is almost certainly an ice jam or scale buildup. If the noise is a constant vibration, it may be a loose internal component, but the "harvest cycle" timing specifically points to the auger-cylinder interface.
How to Fix It
To resolve the grinding noise and clear the obstruction, follow these precise steps:
- Immediately press the Power button to stop the current cycle. Do not let the machine continue to grind, as this can strip the plastic gears of the auger motor.
- Unplug the unit from the wall outlet and remove the ice basket entirely to get a clear view of the dispensing chute.
- Inspect the evaporator opening (the area where the ice drops out). If you see a large chunk of ice wedged at an angle, use a plastic spoon or the provided ice scoop to gently nudge it loose. Never use a metal knife or screwdriver, as scratching the interior coating of the cylinder will cause future ice to stick and jam.
- Perform a "Force Defrost" by pouring approximately 2 cups of lukewarm (not boiling) distilled water directly into the ice reservoir. Let it sit for 10 minutes to melt any internal ice bridges that are not visible from the outside.
- Wipe the interior of the chute with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove any loose mineral flakes.
- Plug the unit back in and run a full Self-Cleaning cycle. Fill the reservoir with a mixture of 50% white vinegar and 50% water to dissolve the scale causing the friction.
- Once the cleaning cycle is complete, rinse the reservoir with fresh water and restart the machine.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Descaling Treatment: If the rattling persists, the mineral buildup is likely too thick for a standard cleaning cycle. Use a commercial descaling solution (citric acid based) and run the self-cleaning cycle three times in a row. This removes the "grit" from the cylinder walls that causes the auger to rattle.
- Check Leveling: Ensure the machine is on a perfectly flat, hard surface. If the unit is tilted, the auger may be putting uneven pressure on one side of the cylinder wall, causing a rhythmic grinding sound. Use a bubble level to confirm the machine is balanced within 1-2 degrees.
- Inspect the Water Filter: A clogged filter can cause erratic water flow, leading to "dry" ice pockets that are harder for the auger to push through. Replace the filter if it has been in use for more than 3 months.
- Reset the Control Board: Unplug the machine for at least 30 minutes to allow the capacitors on the control board to discharge fully. This can sometimes reset the timing of the harvest cycle motor if it has become desynchronized.

- Airflow Clearance: Ensure there is at least 4-6 inches of space around the side vents. Overheating can cause the ice to melt and refreeze rapidly (wet-freeze), creating the hard ice bridges that cause rattling.
- No Metal Tools: Never insert metal objects into the dispensing chute to clear a jam. The evaporator cylinder is precision-engineered; a single scratch can create a permanent snag point for ice.
