ice maker makes a loud grinding noise when it's trying to harvest ice, sounds awful.

— asked by Morgan

DIAGNOSIS The evaporator plate is frozen to the ice cubes. The harvest cycle uses a heater to loosen them. If the heater fails or the cycle is too short, the auger tries to force them off.

FIX Unplug the machine. Let it thaw completely for 6-8 hours. This resets the thermal state. Plug it back in and start a cycle. The noise should stop if it was a one-time freeze-up.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The internal gear motor for the auger might have stripped plastic gears. You'll hear a persistent grinding or whirring with no ice movement. This requires a replacement motor assembly.

HEADS UP That grinding under load can break the auger. If the noise continues after a full thaw, stop using it to prevent a more expensive repair.
