Diagnosis
The loud grinding or crunching noise emanating from the right side of the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e is typically caused by a mechanical failure in the carriage assembly or a misalignment of the carriage drive belt. This specific sound occurs when the stepper motor attempts to drive the ink carriage along the carriage rod, but encounters physical resistance. Because the motor continues to push despite the obstruction, the gears "slip" or grind against one another, creating that characteristic harsh metallic or plastic crunching sound. In most cases, this is caused by one of three things: a buildup of thickened ink and dust on the stainless steel carriage rod (creating excessive friction), a foreign object (such as a torn piece of 20lb bond paper or a fallen paperclip) lodged in the far-right service station, or a perished lubricant on the rail. You can confirm this by opening the ink access door and attempting to gently slide the carriage by hand while the unit is off; if it catches or feels "sticky" on the right side, the rail is contaminated or obstructed.
How to Fix It
To resolve this mechanical obstruction and stop the grinding noise, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the printer and physically unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to prevent the carriage from moving unexpectedly during the process.
- Open the main cartridge access door. If the carriage is locked to the right, do not force it violently. Gently nudge it toward the center to see if it moves.
- Using a high-intensity flashlight, inspect the far-right "parking" area. Look for small scraps of paper or debris lodged in the service station (the sponge-like area where the printhead cleans itself). Use a pair of needle-nose pliers or tweezers to remove any foreign objects.
- Locate the silver carriage rod (the thin metal rail running the width of the printer). Using a lint-free microfiber cloth dampened with 70% isopropyl alcohol, wipe the entire length of the rod from left to right. Remove all black ink residue and accumulated dust.
- Check the tension of the black rubber drive belt. Ensure it is seated properly in its pulleys and that no teeth are missing from the belt.
- Apply a tiny amount of high-grade synthetic grease (lithium-based) to the rod using a cotton swab. Do not over-apply, as excess grease will attract dust and create a sludge that causes the grinding to return.
- Close the access door, plug the unit back in, and run a "Print Head Alignment" page from the printer's control panel to calibrate the movement.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Encoder Strip Contamination: Look for the clear plastic strip (the encoder strip) that runs parallel to the carriage rod. If there is a smudge of ink or a fingerprint on this strip, the printer "loses" the position of the carriage and will slam it into the right wall, causing a loud crash. Gently clean the strip with a dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use alcohol on this strip as it can erase the timing marks.
- Inspect the Service Station Gears: The grinding may be coming from the waste ink pads' wiper mechanism on the right. If the wiper gear is stripped or jammed, the carriage cannot "park" correctly. Use a flashlight to check if the small plastic wiper arm is bent or stuck in an upright position.
- Hard Reset the Carriage Logic: Sometimes the motor driver gets stuck in a loop. With the printer on, pull the power cord from the back. Wait 60 seconds. While unplugged, hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge capacitors. Plug it back in and see if the initialization sequence completes without the noise.
- Check for Paper Jam in the Rear Access: Remove the rear paper tray and check the duplexer area. A piece of paper jammed in the rear can put pressure on the chassis, slightly bowing the frame and causing the carriage rod to misalign.

- Never use WD-40 or heavy oils on the carriage rod; these attract dust and can degrade the plastic components of the carriage assembly.
- Avoid touching the copper contacts on the ink cartridges or the printhead during cleaning, as skin oils can cause connectivity errors.
- If you hear a high-pitched squeal accompanying the grinding, it is a sign that the carriage belt is slipping and may need replacement.
- Always ensure you are using genuine HP 962 or 962XL cartridges, as off-brand cartridges can sometimes have slightly different dimensions that cause the carriage to snag during movement.
