The appearance of horizontal streaks or faded bands on an HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e is typically caused by "nozzle dropout." This occurs when microscopic air bubbles or dried ink deposits block the tiny apertures of the printhead, preventing a consistent flow of ink onto the page. While the printer's internal cleaning cycle attempts to force ink through these blockages, repeated cycles can actually exacerbate the problem by introducing air into the ink delivery system or causing the printhead to overheat. To confirm the root cause, you must examine the Print Quality Diagnostic page. If the magenta, cyan, or yellow blocks show white gaps or "missing" lines, you have a physical clog. If the lines are present but faint across the entire page, the issue is likely related to the ink delivery system, an expired cartridge, or a failure in the printhead's electrical contact points rather than a simple clog.
How to Fix It
Since standard software cleaning has failed, you must perform a targeted deep clean and physical reset of the ink system.
- Power down the printer and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to clear the volatile memory.
- Open the cartridge access door and remove all four ink cartridges.
- Inspect the gold-colored electrical contacts on the back of the cartridges and the corresponding pins inside the carriage. Use a lint-free cloth dampened with a tiny amount of distilled water to gently wipe away any ink smears or debris.
- Reinsert the cartridges firmly, ensuring you hear a distinct "click" for each one.
- Plug the printer back in and power it on. On the control panel, navigate to Settings (Gear Icon) > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printheads.
- Select Level 2 Cleaning (the more intensive cycle). Do not run this more than twice in a 24-hour period.
- Once completed, select Print Quality Report. Examine the color blocks. If the streaks are gone, calibrate the alignment by going to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Align Printhead and following the on-screen prompts to scan the alignment page.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Manual Printhead Soak: If the printhead is removable (or if you can access the nozzles), use a syringe and a small piece of tubing to gently push 2-3ml of warm distilled water or a specialized printhead cleaning solution directly into the ink intake ports. Let it sit for 2 hours to dissolve stubborn, dried ink before attempting another cleaning cycle.
- Check for Vent Blockage: Inspect the top of the ink cartridges. There is a small orange pull-tab or a vent hole that must be completely clear. If the vent is blocked by adhesive residue from the packaging, a vacuum forms inside the cartridge, preventing ink from flowing regardless of how many cleaning cycles you run.
- Replace the Printhead Assembly: On the 9015e, the printhead is a consumable part. If the diagnostic report still shows missing lines after a manual soak, the internal heating elements of the printhead have likely burned out. Replace the printhead assembly (Part #HP 9010 series printhead) to restore full functionality.
- Verify Paper Settings: Ensure the paper type in the print dialog matches the actual paper in the tray. Printing "Plain Paper" settings on "Photo Paper" or "Heavyweight" stock can cause the ink to bead or streak because the printer is not applying the correct volume of ink for the surface tension of the media.

- Avoid Over-Cleaning: Running the "Clean Printheads" utility more than three times in a row wastes a significant amount of ink and fills the waste ink absorber faster, which can lead to a "Service Required" error.
- Maintain Ink Levels: Never let your ink levels drop to zero. Running a cartridge dry allows air to enter the printhead, which is significantly harder to clear than a standard ink clog.
- Print Regularly: To prevent nozzle dropout, print at least one full-color page every week. This keeps the ink flowing and prevents the nozzles from drying out during periods of inactivity.
- Use Genuine Ink: Third-party inks often have different viscosities and surface tensions, which can lead to more frequent clogging in the high-precision nozzles of the OfficeJet Pro series.
