Diagnosis
The HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e utilizes a series of optical sensors and mechanical "flags" (small plastic levers) to track paper movement. A "ghost jam" occurs when the printer's logic board believes a piece of paper is blocking a sensor, even when the main tray is empty. This is typically caused by a "flag" that has been knocked out of alignment or is stuck in the "down" position due to a build-up of paper dust and adhesive residue from labels. Another common culprit is the duplexer assembly—the removable module at the rear of the machine. If a tiny fragment of paper (even one smaller than a fingernail) is lodged near the reverse-feed rollers, it can trigger a persistent error state. Because these sensors are recessed, you cannot see the debris without a high-intensity light source, leading you to believe the path is clear when it is actually obstructed at a critical sensor point.
How to Fix It
To clear a phantom jam and reset the sensor logic, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the printer using the power button, then physically unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Do not just turn it off; the capacitors must discharge to reset the sensor state.
- Remove the input tray (Tray 1) completely by pulling it out of the chassis. Look inside the cavity with a flashlight to ensure no scraps are lodged in the pick-up rollers.
- Open the front cartridge access door. Gently move the printhead carriage from side to side. If it resists, check for small torn pieces of paper caught in the carriage path.
- Locate the duplexer on the back of the printer. Press the release button and pull the duplexer unit straight out. This is the most common site for hidden jams. Inspect the rollers for any white paper fibers or adhesive strips from labels.
- Use a can of compressed air to blow out the sensor channels in the duplexer and the rear feed area. Focus on the small plastic levers (flags) and flick them gently with a toothpick to ensure they spring back into place instantly.
- Reinsert the duplexer until it clicks firmly. Slide the paper tray back in and close all access doors.
- Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors for this test) and power the unit on.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a "Hard Reset" by unplugging the power cord from the back of the printer while it is still powered on. Wait exactly 60 seconds. Plug it back in and immediately check if the error persists. This forces the firmware to re-poll all hardware sensors.
- Clean the Pick-Up Rollers. Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water (no alcohol) to wipe the rubber rollers in the paper tray area. If the rollers are slipping, the printer may think there is a jam because the paper isn't reaching the sensor within the expected millisecond window.
- Check for "Paper Weight" mismatches. Go into the printer's embedded Web Server (EWS) or the control panel settings and ensure the paper type is set to "Plain Paper" and not "Heavy" or "Cardstock" if you are using standard 20lb paper. Incorrect settings can cause the printer to time out and report a jam.
- Inspect the Rear Access Door. Ensure the plastic tabs on the rear door are fully seated. If the door is slightly ajar (even by a millimeter), the 9015e will trigger a jam error as a safety precaution.
Heads Up
- Avoid using "Cheap" or non-standard paper with high dust content, as this accumulates on the optical sensors and causes frequent ghost jams.
- Never use a metal object (like a screwdriver or tweezers) to fish out paper; you risk scratching the drum or snapping a plastic sensor flag, which requires a full chassis replacement.
- If you use adhesive labels, always load them in the tray manually and ensure they are perfectly aligned to prevent "peel-off" fragments from sticking to the internal rollers.
- Keep the printer in a low-humidity environment. High humidity can cause paper to curl, which triggers the "jam" sensor even if the paper eventually passes through.
