Diagnosis
The streaks appearing on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e scans are typically caused by "debris artifacts." This occurs when a microscopic layer of dust, fingerprint oils, or ink residue adheres to the scanner glass. Because the CIS (Contact Image Sensor) moves across the glass to capture the image, any single speck of dust acts as a physical obstruction, which the sensor interprets as a continuous line or streak across the entire length of the digital page. In this specific model, the issue is often twofold. First, the primary flatbed glass collects oils from fingertips during document placement. Second, the underside of the scanner lid—specifically the white plastic backing—collects dust and graphite from the papers you are copying. If the lid is dirty, it creates "shadow streaks" or graying around the edges of the scan because the white background isn't reflecting light uniformly back into the sensor. You can confirm this by scanning a blank white sheet of paper; if you see a consistent vertical line in the same spot every time, the debris is on the glass. If you see mottled gray patches, the lid backing is the culprit.
How to Fix It
To clean the scanner without scratching the delicate glass coating or damaging the sensor, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the printer and unplug the power cable from the wall to prevent any electrical shorts if liquid seeps into the chassis.
- Lift the scanner lid fully. Use a can of compressed air (held upright) to blow out any loose particles from the edges of the glass frame and the hinges.
- Dampen a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth (avoid paper towels or tissues, as these can leave micro-scratches on the glass). Do not spray liquid directly onto the glass; instead, apply a small amount of distilled water or a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution to the cloth.
- Wipe the glass surface using a "Z-pattern" motion, starting from the top-left corner, moving across to the right, and then diagonally back to the left. This ensures you are pushing the debris off the edge rather than smearing it across the center.
- Pay special attention to the narrow strip of glass on the left side if you are using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). This small strip is the primary cause of vertical streaks during multi-page scans.
- Flip the scanner lid over and gently wipe the white plastic backing sheet with a dry microfiber cloth to remove graphite and dust.
- Allow the glass to air-dry for 60 seconds before plugging the unit back in and performing a test scan of a blank white page.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Clean with a Cotton Swab: If a streak persists, there may be a stubborn piece of adhesive or ink trapped in the very edge of the glass where it meets the plastic bezel. Dip a precision cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol and scrub the perimeter of the glass frame carefully.
- Check for Glass Scratches: Use a bright flashlight to inspect the glass at a 45-degree angle. If you see a physical scratch in the glass, cleaning will not work. In this case, the scanner assembly must be replaced, as the glass is not a user-replaceable part.
- Clean the ADF Rollers: If streaks only appear when using the top feeder but not the flatbed, the rollers are dirty. Use a damp, lint-free cloth to wipe the rubber pick-up rollers located inside the ADF tray to remove ink buildup.
- Calibrate the Scanner: Perform a hard reset by unplugging the printer while it is on, waiting 30 seconds, and plugging it back in. This forces the scanner head to re-home and recalibrate its starting position.
