just got an express water ro5dx, is the water safe to drink if it tastes kinda salty?

— asked by Alex

A salty taste indicates a problem. Do not drink it.

DIAGNOSIS: Membrane failure or incorrect rejection rate. Chloride ions are passing through.

FIX:

  • Check the feed water TDS. If it's extremely high (>2000 mg/liter), the membrane may be overwhelmed.
  • Verify the wastewater (drain) line is flowing freely. A clog increases pressure and reduces rejection.
  • Test the product water TDS with a meter. Compare to feed water. Rejection should be 90-98%.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK: The reverse osmosis membrane is likely spent or damaged. Replace it. Also check the pre-filters; a failed sediment filter can foul the membrane.

HEADS UP: Water with high chloride and sulfate content is corrosive and can damage plumbing fixtures. Identify and replace the faulty component immediately.
