If the reservoir is not seated perfectly flush against the base, air can also leak into the system, causing the machine to "gasp" during the brew cycle.
How to Fix It
To eliminate excessive gurgling and restore smooth flow, follow these precise steps:
- Reseat the Reservoir: Power off the unit and unplug it. Lift the water reservoir completely off the base. Inspect the bottom valve of the reservoir and the intake port on the machine for any debris or coffee grounds. Firmly press the reservoir back down, ensuring it clicks or seats fully to create an airtight seal.
- Perform a Deep Descale: Mix a solution of 50% white distilled vinegar and 50% filtered water. Fill the reservoir to the maximum fill line with this mixture.
- Initiate the Cycle: Place a clean carafe under the showerhead. Turn the machine on and start a brew cycle without adding any coffee grounds to the filter.
- The Pause Method: Once the machine starts gurgling, turn the power off and let the machine sit for 30 minutes. This allows the vinegar to break down the calcium carbonate deposits inside the heating element.
- Flush the System: After 30 minutes, turn the machine back on and finish the brew cycle. Repeat the process with two full reservoirs of plain, cold filtered water to remove any remaining vinegar taste or scent.
If That Didn't Work
- Clear the Showerhead: Use a thin needle or a paperclip to gently poke through the small holes in the spray head (the part that drips water onto the grounds). If these holes are clogged with oils or minerals, the backpressure causes the internal tubes to gurgle loudly.
- Check for Air Locks: If the machine was stored empty, an air lock may have formed. Fill the reservoir to the brim, then gently lift and drop the reservoir several times while the machine is on to force air bubbles out of the intake valve.
- Inspect the One-Way Valve: Look at the bottom of the water reservoir for a small rubber gasket/valve. If this gasket is warped or cracked, it will suck air into the system. If it is damaged, the reservoir assembly must be replaced as the valve is integrated.
- Verify Power Stability: Ensure the machine is plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than a crowded power strip. Voltage drops can occasionally cause the heating element to cycle unevenly, leading to irregular boiling sounds.
