First, unplug the unit and let it cool. The most common cause is an overflow.

Check that you're not overfilling the water reservoir past the 12-cup line.

Next, make sure the brew basket and permanent filter (if yours has one) are correctly seated in the unit. A misaligned basket can cause water to bypass it.
