my avid power drill makes a grinding noise when i use it, especially under pressure. what's wrong?

— asked by Rob

Grinding noise means internal mechanical damage. Likely stripped planetary gears or a damaged bearing.

Diagnosis: The gear train inside the transmission housing is failing.

Fix: Stop using the drill immediately. Continuing will cause complete failure.

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Inspect the chuck. If it wobbles side-to-side, the spindle bearing is gone.
  3. If the chuck seems firm, the issue is in the gearbox.

If that didn't work: There is no user fix. The drill requires disassembly and replacement of the gear set or bearings. This is not a user-serviceable procedure for this model.

Heads up: This is typically caused by exceeding the tool's torque capacity—using it as a hammer drill on concrete, forcing it through heavy material, or using excessive side pressure. For high-torque applications, use the low-speed setting (1) and let the tool do the work. Do not lean on it.
