the clutch settings on my avid power driver don't seem to do anything, it just drives screws all the way in. how do i set it?

The clutch ring is either set to the drill icon or you're using an incorrect bit/screw combo.

Fix:

  • Look at the numbered ring behind the chuck. Turn it so the desired number (e.g., 5, 10, 15) aligns with the arrow or mark on the drill body. Higher numbers allow more torque before the clutch disengages.
  • CRITICAL: Ensure the setting is not on the drill bit symbol. This symbol bypasses the clutch entirely for drilling, which will drive every screw to the limit.
  • Use a bit that properly fits the screw head. A worn or ill-fitting bit will cam out (slip), making the clutch ineffective.

If that didn't work: Test the clutch on a scrap piece of wood. Set it to a low number like 3 or 4. The drill should disengage (make a clicking sound and stop turning) with very little resistance. If it doesn't click at all on any setting except the drill icon, the clutch mechanism is likely broken.

Heads up: The clutch prevents over-driving and stripping screws. Start with a low setting and increase until the screw is driven flush without sinking. Different screw lengths and materials require different settings.
