Diagnosis
Liquid forcefully shooting from the vent pipe beneath the pressure regulator is a sign that boiling contents are being forced up into the valve assembly before proper pressure has stabilized. This is primarily caused by excessive heat or overfilling the pot, preventing the pressure cooker from sealing and pressurizing correctly.
How to Fix It
Immediately take the following steps:
- Turn Off the Heat: Do not move the cooker. Simply switch the burner off to stop the violent boiling.
- Let It Depressurize Naturally: Leave the regulator in place and allow the cooker to cool down on its own. Do not use a quick-release method while liquid is ejecting.
- Check Fill Level: For your Barton 6-quart model, never fill past the ⅔ max line. For foods that foam or expand (like rice, beans, or pasta), the maximum is ½ full.
- Adjust Cooking Technique: When starting a new cycle, place the regulator on the vent pipe only after a full, steady flow of regular steam (not spurts of liquid) has been venting for at least 60 seconds to purge air. Then maintain only enough heat to keep the regulator gently rocking.
If That Didn't Work
If the problem persists even with correct fill levels and low heat, inspect the valve and vent pipe for food debris clogging the small openings. Ensure the silicone sealing ring is properly seated in the lid groove, clean, and not cracked or warped. A damaged ring can prevent a proper seal, causing similar symptoms.
Heads Up
While this ejection is a malfunction and can cause burns from hot liquid or steam, a modern pressure cooker like the Barton has multiple backup safety valves. However, consistently operating it in this condition can degrade the seal and valves over time. Always ensure the pressure has dropped and the lid unlocks easily before opening.
