Diagnosis
The safety valve (also called the pressure release or overpressure plug) is designed to lift and release steam only if the primary vent pipe becomes blocked and pressure rises to a dangerous level. A continuous, forceful blast of steam from this valve is a critical safety alert. It means the normal steam release path—through the vent pipe in the lid where the regulator weight sits—is obstructed, forcing all pressure relief through the emergency valve.
How to Fix It
- Immediately turn off the heat source. Do not attempt to move the cooker.
- Do not touch the valve or try to force-cool the cooker. Allow it to cool naturally and depressurize completely, which can take 20-30 minutes. The safety valve will stop hissing when pressure is gone.
- Once cool, open the lid and locate the vent pipe (the short tube or hole in the lid directly under the regulator weight).
- Visually inspect and use a wooden chopstick or pipe cleaner to gently clear any food particles, starch, or debris clogging the pipe. Ensure you can see light through it.
- Also check that the main sealing gasket is properly seated and not folded or damaged, as a misaligned gasket can sometimes divert food into the vent.
- Reassemble, ensuring all parts are clean and the vent path is clear before next use.
If That Didn't Work
If the safety valve continues to release steam prematurely even after clearing the vent pipe, the valve itself may be faulty or the gasket may be worn. Inspect the rubber or silicone safety valve seal for cracks, tears, or hardening. For the Barton model, this valve is typically a removable plug; ensure it is clean and seats properly. If the problem persists, contact Barton customer support for a replacement safety valve—do not use the cooker with a malfunctioning safety system.
Heads Up
Never attempt to plug, modify, or hold down the safety valve. Its operation is your last line of defense against excessive pressure. Always ensure the vent pipe is clear before each use, especially when cooking foods like beans, grains, or thick sauces that can foam and cause blockages.
